Gran Telescopio Canarias - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) ("Great Telescope Canary Islands"), sometimes called Grantecan, is a 10.4m reflecting telescope being built at the Observatory of Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma.
Its primary mirror is formed by 36 hexagonal segments fully controlled by an active optics control system.
The GTC Project is a partnership formed by several institutions from Spain(90%), Mexico(5%) and the University of Florida (USA) (5%) and an initiative from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).

Once completed, the Gran Telescopio Canarias, or GTC, will be one of the largest optical infrared telescopes in the world, through which UF and other astronomers will be able to observe the faintest and most distant objects in the skies.
GTC is under construction atop an 8,000- foot mountain on the island of La Palma, one of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands, an archipelago consisting of several larger volcanic islands and numerous smaller ones.
A key component of UF’s participation in the GTC project is the construction of “CanariCam,” a sophisticated and flexible infrared camera specially designed for the GTC telescope by a UF team, led by astronomy professor Charles Telesco.

 For ING Newsletter
GTC is a segmented 10-m aperture telescope based on the Keck telescope design.
The advent of GTC is expected to dominate the scientific work on La Palma in general, and impact on the work carried out at ING.
A possible collaboration between ING and GTC would not only be very attractive from the scientific perspective, but is also of strategic importance for the long-term future and stability of ING into the era of 8-m class telescopes.

GTC is currently under construction at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma, off the west coast of Africa.
The Instituto Astrofisica Canarias (IAC) operates the observatory and is the leading astronomical institution in Spain.
By locating the GTC offices close to the IAC, a vigorous exchange of ideas between the telescope engineers and astronomers is ensured.

Living in a big city you won’t see them during the day, naturally, but at night there is so much light...people think the lights are pretty because they shine up into space, but the reality is that they obscure the view of the sky.
Space travel is one such dream: his message is that all the hard work, dedication and sacrifice are worth it, because floating weightlessly in space, looking down at the earth, is nothing less than a dream come true.

UF to become partner with Spanish government in world's largest telescope
Participation in the Gran Telescopio Canarias, or GTC for short, is the next logical step for the astronomy department, which already has gained access to the world's existing largest telescopes by making the sensitive instruments needed to gather and interpret observations, Dermott said.
UF's participation in the GTC project means UF astronomy faculty and students will have exclusive use of the telescope for 12 nights annually, though it will share an additional eight nights with the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias.
The Gran Telescopio Canarias will have as its "eye" 36 hexagonal ceramic glass elements joined together to form a 32.8-foot primary mirror, the largest mirror of any telescope in the world.

I am particularly interested in using spectroscopy and ultradeep photometry on this type of object, which would open up galaxies for us and allow us to look at the way they were formed and how they have evolved from their very first stages.
Fortunately the instruments being developed for the GTC will be cutting edge; and they will be installed on a telescope that will be the world’s largest, at a time when no instrument can rival them and no telescope will have greater potential.
In the search for galaxies at very high redshift, whose principal characteristics are in the near infrared, EMIR and the GTC will be a winning combination for a number of years to come.

Gran Telescopio Canarias - the company and the telescope project - is an endeavor funded by the Spanish government to create the world's largest telescope on one of the best astronomical observing sites, the Canary Islands.
"The Gran Telescopio Canarias will be used for gaining a better view of the faintest and most distant objects in our universe and discover others so far unknown to us," GTC scientific director J. Miguel Rodriguez Espinosa said in a promotional video.
GTC brochures indicate the observatory site is 2,400 meters - about 7,200 feet - above sea level and above the clouds as well.

The GTC — currently one of Spain’s largest science projects and the biggest European telescope in the Northern Hemisphere — will be comparable in performance with the Keck telescope on Hawaii (USA) and the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope on the Cerro Paranal in Chile.
The construction of the GTC will increase observation capacity for the Northern Hemisphere in Europe, while strengthening the location on the Canary Islands, which is to be known as the European Northern Observatory (ENO).
The GTC is expected to carry out its first observations at the end of 2002 with a temporary primary mirror comprised of eight to ten segments The remaining segments will be installed in the course of 2003 and the whole system will finally come into full service in 2004.

UF is involved in building a telescope that will use “adaptive optics” technology, which could collect resolutions as good as those of the famed Hubble.
UF astronomy professor Vicki Sarajedini wants the telescope in orbit as long as possible, even if some of its parts break down, because her research depends on the data that the Hubble transmits.
She said the telescope, when finished in 2005, will be the largest on earth, with a diameter of 10 meters, compared to the Hubble’s 2.5 meters.
