Granada was the only one of the original four ITA franchisees from 1954 which survived as a franchise holder into the twenty-first century, until the merger of its parent company, Granada plc in 2004 into ITV plc.
Granada Breeze, the daytime lifestyle channel, was broadcast from a custom-built conservatory studio in the grounds of the existing studios, but was the first channel to disappear, closing in 2002.
Granada Plus (a channel devoted to showing Granada's back catalogue of TV programmes, including classic episodes of their most popular show, Coronation Street) was first retitled 'Plus', and then eventually turned into ITV3 with just minutes' notice to staff in November 2004.

Granada Television was the British ITV (commercial television) contractor for the "North of England" weekday franchise from 1954 (broadcasting began on May 3, 1956) until 1968, and for the "Northwest England" all-week franchise from 1968.
Granada did not produce light entertainment extravaganzas of its own, but was quite happy to transmit those produced by its co-franchisees, but by the mid-1970s it was producing programmes for an international audience, such as Laurence Olivier Presents (1976-78), Brideshead Revisited (1981), and from 1984 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Granada Television were very protective of their name and 1972, when the Ford Granada car was released by Ford of Great Britain, Granada threatened legal action against Ford but later backed down.

By November 2003, Granada and BSkyB, co-owners of Granada Sky Broadcasting, which ran the golden oldies channel Plus, formerly Granada Plus, were in discussions over the rights to certain classic shows that were being shown on Plus.
After all, ITV and Sky had been quite reluctant bedfellows, though this was mainly down to Carlton’s influence rather than Granada’s - but both Granada and Scottish TV had been partners with Sky in channel ventures, some of which had been less than successful.
Sky didn’t want to give Freeview any kind of edge, as they continue growing their platform at an incredible rate, and ITV wanted the 7-million-plus viewers that Sky offered – but they also wanted ITV3 to be higher up the EPG than it would otherwise have been.

LONDON, November 1: As ITV's new digital channel ITV3 geared up for launch today, ITV plc announced the buyout of Sky Ventures' 49.5-percent stake in Granada Sky Broadcasting (GSB) for £10 million.
Sky will also receive 49.5 percent of any proceeds from any future sale of Men and Motors, which will continue operating as is pending a full review of its future.
With the deal, GSB's Plus channel becomes ITV3 tonight on digital terrestrial, cable and satellite platforms, reaching some 13 million homes.

ITV has agreed to buy Sky Ventures' 49.5% share for £10m net of liabilities, from any potential sale of Men & Motors.
Following the acquisition, GSB's channel Plus which was established in 1996 with Sky Ventures and Granada Media as shareholders has ceased transmissions.
On digital satellite Plus has been removed from the EPG a short while ago, ITV2 then moved from its previous position of 175 and can now be found on 118 and ITV3 has been added to channel 119.

MandM, not to be confused with the sweet, was launched in the mid-90s as Granada Men and Motors under the Granada Sky Broadcasting partnership between Granada and Sky.
Along with Granada Plus, these two channels remained under this arrangement until around 2004, losing the Granada tag along the way, when ITV plc finally bought out the other half of GSB in order to get rid of Plus so they could use the EPG space for ITV3.
Men and Motors survived, however, and indeed was actively promoted by ITV, to the extent of being given space to launch on the Freeview platform for the first time in May 2005.
