Grand Bahama is one step closer to returning to normal two and a half months after the island was devastated by two hurricanes with the reopening of the U.S. Pre-Clearance Section at the Grand Bahama International Airport.
The new state-of-the art International Terminal, constructed at a cost of $30 million, was opened in June and the old terminal building was being utilized for domestic travel only.
The former building once served the Grand Bahama community as a domestic and international terminal for decades and became a permanent fixture on the island.

A quiet day at the Grand Bahama International Airport was pierced by what witnesses said was a hail of gunfire that sent persons in the area scrambling for cover.
The General Aviation section of the airport is some distance from the airport’s main terminal and is typically the section where charters, private aircraft and smaller domestic carriers park and depart.
Airport officials, who spoke to investigators at the scene, declined comment to reporters on the incident.

FREEPORT, Grand BahamaInternational air arrivals to Grand Bahama dropped by 76,088 during the first seven months of 2005 compared to the same period last year, according to a recent report compiled by the Grand Bahama International Airport.
Terrance Roberts, director in the Ministry of Tourism on Grand Bahama, explained that the falloff also continues to be directly linked to the closure of the Royal Oasis Resort, which resulted in more than 1,000 fewer available hotel rooms.
The airport’s report noted that fewer carriers are operating flights to Grand Bahama.
