The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small (Petit), low (Basset), wire-haired (Griffon), French (from the Vendeen region) scent hound, used primarily for hunting rabbit.
Though the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has been a very popular hunting dog in France for almost a century, the breed is relatively new to the United States.
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of America was formed in 1984, and the breed entered the Hound Group of the AKC in 1991.

The Grand is a noble headed hound with long ears and a slight roman nose, he has straight front legs unlike the Petit who may have a slight crook.
Reasonably easy to care for, Grands need little expert grooming, as their coats are expected to be seen totally naturally, little trimming is required.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a proud member of some 28 hound breeds which are bred in France even today to serve their original purpose.
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen was used for such large game as roedeer and wolf, while the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen was used to trail and drive smaller quarry, such as rabbit, hare and sometimes even feathered game.
In 1909, a standard for the Basset Griffon Vendéen recognized two types of Basset, one standing 34 to 38 centimeters, or approximately 13 to 15 inches, and the other 38 to 42 centimeters, 15 to 17 inches at the shoulder.

When I was younger, we had a family dog, but when it was time for me to get the first dog of my own, my preferance was for a Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen.
Unfortunately, that breed was not available in Finland at the time, and as I didn´t have enough courage to import one, I bought the Grand´s "little brother" a petit basset in 1996.
Piki is a nice hunting dog, not only in the traditional basset way as a hound, but also as a retriever (on land as well as from water).
