Originally called the Forrestville Settlement, the Grand Boulevard community became a part of Hyde Park Township in 1861, and was annexed with Hyde Park to Chicago in 1889.
The area is bounded by 39th and 51st Streets to the north and south, and by Cottage Grove Avenue and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad tracks to the east and west.
The population of the Grand Boulevard community grew steadily throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century, attracting not only the wealthy, but middle- and working-class American-born whites of Irish, Scottish, and English origin, German Jews, and a few African Americans.

 Greater Grand Crossing
The accident occurred at what is now 75th Street and South Chicago Avenue when Roswell B. Mason, who was to become a Chicago mayor, secretly had intersecting tracks built for the Illinois Central across the rail lines of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad.
Chicago real-estate developer Paul Cornell thought that the area surrounding the intersection, although it was mostly prairie and swampland, would be ideal for suburban development because transportation to Chicago was assured via the railroads.
White City, an amusement park which opened in 1904, towered over the northern part of Greater Grand Crossing from Grand Boulevard, to Calumet Avenue and from 63rd to 67th Streets until it was closed in 1933.
