 Thomas Moran and the American Landscape
Moran's masterpiece from the Yellowstone expedition is entitled "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone," which is his rendition of the spectacular view of the Lower Falls through the deep chasm of yellowish-red sulfur-stained rock which earned Yellowstone its name.
Yellowstone was ideally "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people," but in reality, it was merely the first of many plots of Western land that beckoned industrialists with stores of natural resources and lured tourists with its unparalleled beauty and majesty.
Yellowstone, like the Grand Canyon and the Yosemite Valley, was first established for the benefit and profit of all men involved in its discovery and assessment; that all Americans could and still can enjoy the splendor of these parks is merely a happy coincidence in the game of supply and demand.

Yellowstone is one of the most popular of the national parks, particularly in the western part of the country.
Isa Lake, in the pass between Yellowstone Lake in the east and the Upper Geyser Basin in the west, lies precisely on the continental divide.

One of these lava flows was the Canyon Rhyolite flow, approximately 590,000 years ago which came from the east and ended just west of the present canyon.
Steam rises from vents in the canyon today and the multi-hued rocks of the canyon walls are also evidence of hydrothermally altered rhyolite.
Of the two famous Yellowstone River waterfalls this one stands at a higher elevation, but it is considerably shorter in height than its downstream neighbor, the Lower Falls.

Normally I'll stay inside the park, but in the case of the Grand Canyon it's popular enough all the cool rooms were taken well in advance, and although the park is large in terms of square miles it's also only about a mile from town to the gate and maybe 7 more to the rim.
They say Yellowstone is the best place in the lower 48 to see wildlife and I'm not inclined to argue although it's a polite way of saying it's not as good as Alaska.
The Yellowstone experience involves a lot of seeing cars pulled over, and pulling over yourself to find that somebody saw a bear half an hour ago, and it's gone, but everybody's pulling over because cars are pulled over.

On this particular afternoon I was also fortunate enough to have clouds overhead that would only allow enough direct sunlight through to dramatically light up small sections of the canyon.
This is one of those rare locations that can be equally wonderful in early morning or late afternoon.
Since there are viewpoints on both sides of the canyon and there are views in either direction (towards the falls or down canyon from them) you can get nicely lighted pictures quite frequently.
