  Grand Central Parkway
Along the route of the Grand Central Parkway in central and eastern Queens, Moses proposed a series of corridor parks that would preserve the last of the undeveloped portions of the heavily forested hills of the glacial moraine.
Construction of the Grand Central Parkway began in July 1931 at a ceremony held at the Queens-Nassau border, jointly attended by Moses and Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt.
One of the projects, the $40 million reconstruction of the Grand Central Parkway, was to expand the Astoria-to-Kew Gardens section from six to eight lanes, and the Kew Gardens-to-Glen Oaks section from four to six lanes.

Expansion of the GCP occurred in the 1960s with widening of the parkway from four to eight lanes between the Triborough Bridge and Kew Gardens, and from four to six lanes from Kew Gardens east to Glen Oaks.

 Interchange of the Week-#32
On the Jackie Robinson Parkway, Exit 7 is for I-678 northbound, while Exit 8 is the parkway's terminus at the Grand Central Parkway.
It is helpful to think of the Grand Central Parkway west of the interchange as the "leg" of the trumpet, while that part to the east plus the Jackie Robinson Parkway forms the "through" route.
From the "head" of the trumpet, a ramp serves as Exit 14 from the Grand Central Parkway to Union Turnpike eastbound.

Grand Central Parkway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grand Central Parkway, unsigned New York State Reference Route 907M, is a parkway that stretches from the Triborough Bridge in New York City to Nassau County in Long Island.
Construction for the Parkway began in 1931, and the parkway was widened in 1961 in preparation for the 1964 New York World's Fair in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Parkways throughout The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island use the state-standard design, while the Belt system parkways use a modified version of the Long Island regional parkway shield with the Montauk Point Lighthouse logo.

NYCDOT - Grand Central Parkway Commercial Vehicles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Commercial traffic was prohibited from traveling on the Grand Central Parkway and for years the streets of Astoria have been clogged by truck traffic.
Vehicle volume data and travel time/speed data were also collected, but these parameters are less indicative of the program's effectiveness (at least in the westbound direction) because of fluctuating traffic constrictions associated with MTA reconstruction activities on the Triborough Bridge before and during the monitoring of the Pilot Program.
Auto travel time and total vehicle volume comparisons on the westbound Grand Central Parkway are not definitive due to different constrictions associated with MTA reconstruction activities on the Triborough Bridge before and after implementation of the program.

However, the merge from the Jackie Robinson Parkway to the westbound Grand central parkway west of the Van Wyck Expressway, which has been identified as requiring traffic to come to a full stop before merging on to the Grand Central Parkway, will be facilitated with the addition of an acceleration lane.
The merge of the Jackie Robinson Parkway and Union Turnpike and the eastbound ramp of the Grand Central Parkway to the westbound Jackie Robinson Parkway present three problem areas.
The Grand Central Parkway eastbound ramp to the Jackie Robinson Parkway westbound also forces drivers to come to a full stop and traffic safety is precarious.

 Grand Central Parkway
The Grand Central Parkway is another highway that has been altered radically over the years.
Unlike many other parkways in New York City, the Grand Central Parkway has had numerous improvements with entrance and exit ramps.
One major exception to the improvements of the 1960's and early 1970's is the "Kew Gardens interchange," where the Jackie Robinson Parkway, Van Wyck Expressway (I-678), Queens Boulevard (NY 25) and Union Turnpike also meet.

The Grand Central Parkway was first proposed in 1922 as a way to connect Queens Boulevard with Nassau County.
The driving force behind the project eventually became Long Island State Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who wanted to lure residents of Manhattan and upstate New York to Jones Beach - another highly praised Moses creation that opened in 1929.
Soon after it opened, the public took him at his word and on August 17, 1936 created what may have been the worst traffic jam this City has ever seen (dubbed the "cross country traffic jam").
