Camp township subsequently lost nearly half of its territory upon the organization of Beaver township, after which it was left with substantially the same territory as it now is composed of, viz:.Township seventyeight, range twenty-two, and that part of number seventy-seven, range twenty-two which lies north of the river.
Skunk township gradually lost one portion of its territory after another until it was finally used up, and a number of new townships, less in extent of territory, greater in wealth and population, and known by names much more pleasing to the refined ear, appeared in its stead.
This township was one of the first of the county to be organized, in fact, it was one of the first voting precincts prior to the organization of any civil township.

The name was also given to a township that surrounded Koochiching village; all this before it was adopted as the county's name.
Grand Rapids, the county seat, was 130 miles from the Falls, as the crow flies, but by railway it was more than 400 miles.
When the Minnesota and International Railroad was extended north from Bemidji to Northome in 1903 and finally reached International Falls in 1907, the same year that the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific reached Ranier after being extended north from Virginia, the railroad logging era began in Koochiching County.

The 20th Century Climbers was a group of young people from Bygland, Minnesota, who met for the first time in the schoolhouse of District #4, Bygland Township, on February 8, 1901.
The object of the group was "the general improvement of its members in literary work." At its first meeting, it was decided that Chairman Severin Momb would write the constitution and by-laws for the society, which would then be voted on at the following meeting.
