Although the Grand Island tornadoes were not the most damaging ever, they moved so slowly about 5 mph compared to many tornadoes moving as fast as 60-70 mph that ''they still caused considerable damage,'' Wakimoto said.
Nebraska's network of spotters has improved every year, and ''in that respect we are a lot better off than we were 10-15 years ago,'' he said.
The Grand Island weather service office is scheduled to move to a new office just north of Hastings in 1992, and the new office will have a NEXRAD radar.

Ted Fujita was born on October 23, 1920 in northern Kyushu, the southwesternmost island in Japan.
Dr. Fujita was asked to apply his microanalysis techniques to the barograph traces from a case involving a tornado outbreak in Kansas and Oklahoma on June 25, 1953.
One steel beam struck the ground outside the tornado damage path at a 23 degree angle and was imbedded nearly eight feet.

Tornadoes can occur that are entirely wrapped in heavy rain, and I have seen lighting near tornadoes on many occasions, and even some film/video footage where lightning flashes have occurred WITHIN the tornado's funnel-shaped cloud.
The Tornado Team: It seems like, theoretically, that it would be possible to travel along in the middle of a tornado and survive, but I cannot imagine it would happen in real life.
There is an "eye" in tornadoes, similar to the one in hurricanes, but it is so small and there is so much debris traveling at extremely high speeds that it would be hard to survive the experience without being killed or seriously injured.

If the middle supercell(biggest, baddest, and closest) that produced 4 tornadoes in a row, would have moved maybe 7 or 8 miles further north the tornadoes would have hit my job site and I was stuck at work.
I caught 3 tornadoes on a long shot with a lot of hope, not to mention a supercell that moved south for 6+ hours.
Wayne/Coleridge, Nebraska area: I got to the only storm that had a tornado warning on it and watched it's outflow, it had to have produced an hour prior or so, push south.

The tornado potential was good today and two tornado watches were issued for the area but the best storms formed farther west, deeper into Colorado.
A tornado watch was issued for the region and we did encounter torrential rain, frequent lightning and some small hail.
These tornadoes were very weak and did not have any condensation funnel but they were churning up the farmer's fields, kicking up a lot of dirt.

Most people from Nebraska have vivid memories of the Omaha tornado on May 6, 1975, or the Grand Island tornadoes of June 6, 1980.
While these tornadoes did significant amounts of damage, they are not the a part of the top ten killer tornadoes.
The tornado continued on into Iowa where 3 people were killed north of Bartlett and 2 people were killed SE of Glenwood in Mills County.
