Balsam Lake is the highest point of the Trent Severn Waterway with an elevation on the upstream side of the Rosedale Lock of 598 ft above Lake Ontario.
Balsam Lake is the first place to stop for a swim and lunch for down bound boats since Lake Simcoe and is surrounded by cottages.
Balsam is approximately 8 miles long with a width of roughly 3 miles.

 Lakes
Balsam is located wthin the Kawartha Lakes chain, and is the "top" lake in the chain, from which waters flow both north (to Mitchell Lake) and south (to Cameron Lake).
It is fed by Sturgeon Lake to the west, and the Pigeon River to the south, as well as the Bald Lake chain to the north-east.
In the first half of the fishing season, walleyes are the primary target on this lake; however, in the latter half of the season, this lake receives very heavy muskie pressure, which peaks during the month of September, where muskie anglers outnumber all other anglers by up to 4 to 1.

Grand Island, in Balsam Lake, belongs mostly to Bexley.
In the northwest are Upper and Lower Mud lakes, drained into dalton by Head River, which again enters the northeast corner of Carden, cuts the corner of Laxton, and flows through the southern part of Digby to the lake.
In Carden the early settlements were to the southeast, and northwest of the tamarac and balsam plains, which occupy a large area in the centre of the township.

Small complexes of parallel beach ridges and swales occupy the sandy lake plain along Grand Traverse Bay and at Bowers Harbor; beach ridges are well drained, and the swales vary in drainage condition, from shallow ponds to shallow organic soils supporting swamp forest.
Two of the long, narrow lakes, Torch and Elk, were bays of Lake Michigan until they were cut off by sand deposition during Nipissing time (Dorr and Eschman 1984).
Although swamps and small lakes are found in depressions between many of the drumlins, some depressions are relatively well drained.

Some have been introduced, without success, some made it over to the island on their own but did not survive, and some have simply never have been on the island at all.
