The film that wins the grand jury prize for a dramatic feature at this year's Sundance Film Festival is guaranteed many things, but commercial success isn't one of them.
It is generally understood that Sundance juries, which are composed of independent filmmakers, actors and actresses, producers, journalists and others associated with low-budget moviemaking, are sympathetic to films that have little chance in the marketplace.
A "Napoleon Dynamite" or a "Garden State," to cite two films that were shut out of the 2004 festival prizes but went on to do very well at the box office ($44,540,956 and $26,782,316, respectively), didn't need that kind of help.

Two prizes for "originality of vision" went to two first-time directors: Rian Johnson, for the neo-noir mystery "Brick," and video artist Miranda July, for her original family comedy, "Me and You and Everyone We Know." Focus Features has acquired "Brick," and July's film came into the festival with IFC Films as its distributor.
The dramatic jury also awarded two acting prizes: to Amy Adams for her role as a pregnant woman in "Junebug," which Sony Pictures Classics is circling for distribution, and to newcomer Lou Pucci for the family drama "Thumbsucker," which Focus Features is chasing.
