Orangeism in the United States of America
Know ye that we, the Grand Master and Members of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, do hereby certify that there is no objection or impediment on the part of the Loyal Orange Institution of Ireland to the formation of an Independent Association of Orangemen in and for the United States of America.
The receipt of the certificate was acknowledged by John H. Bond, Grand Master of the Loyal Orange Institution of the United States of America, in correspondence dated, May 4, 1870, with thanks to the Grand Lodge of Ireland.
In the early part of this century the American Institution split through inter-state rivalry and two bodies emerged, each claiming to be the supreme Grand Lodge.

Shortly after that, a select committee in the Grand Lodge of Ohio studied the matter for a year and reported that it was satisfied beyond all question that Colored Masonry had a legitimate beginning in this Country, as much as any other Freemasonry; infact it came from the same source.

During the years that Paul Revere presided as Grand Master, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts was still in the initial stages of formation as indicated by the various problems it encountered and the resolutions it passed at Quarterly Communications.
According to the Constitution of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts at that time, the Grand Master was to be elected by a ballot at large with "every voter writing the candidate he thinks best qualified." The brother who had two-thirds of the votes cast was elected Grand Master.
He knew that having served as Grand Master for three years, he was ineligible for re-election, according to the Constitution, but he could say with pride that there were "upwards of forty" Lodges within the jurisdiction, most of which were represented and paid dues.
