Grand Manan is jurisdictionally part of Charlotte County in the province of New Brunswick.
Grand Manan was initially included as part of the British colony of Nova Scotia until it was included in the new colony of New Brunswick, created in 1784.
Grand Manan was also claimed by the United States until 1817 when this claim was dropped in exchange for Britain dropping its sovereignty claims over Moose, Frederick and Dudley islands in nearby Cobscook Bay.

We were on an island we had reached over a sandbar at low tide, off the east coast of Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, and one thing was certain: This was no ordinary Friday night for my friend Sarah and me, Bostonians both.
Grand Manan considers itself the ''dulse capital of the world" and residents earn their living by hand-picking the edible seaweed at low tide, drying it on fields of beach rocks, then selling it to a local cooperative, which ships it around the world.
Although Grand Manan belongs to New Brunswick, it's just 8 miles off the coast of Maine (and about 21 miles from the Canada mainland) and is accessible from Eastport, Maine, by way of Deer Island, Campobello Island, (home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's rustic 34-room summer cottage), and Letete in southern New Brunswick.

With a population of about 2500 - chiefly in the villages of North Head, Grand Harbour and Seal Cove - its chief industries are scallops, herring, lobster and salmon aquaculture, dulse (seaweed) gathering and tourism.
Grand Manan is on the eastern flyway for migratory birds, and more than 400 species have been counted at the east coast sanctuary between Grand Harbour and Seal Cove.
The island is a convenient spot for whale watching, as several species, including humpback, minke, fin, pilot and right, inhabit the surrounding waters.
