The Superior Hiking Trail passes near Grand Marais and Judge C. Magney State Park is nearby with the peculiar Devil's Kettle waterfalls.

If that is the case, then Grand Marais means “Big Harbor.” Similarly, the Ojibwe name for Grande Marais is “Kitchi-Bitobig” which means, “double body of water,” a reference to the two bays which form the large, welcoming Lake Superior harbor of Grand Marais.
Road access to Grand Marais is by Minnesota Highway 61, which generally follows the shore of Lake Superior and is known as the North Shore Scenic Drive.

With the entrance between the piers being somewhat narrow, the decision was made to place a second light on the west breakwater, and a crew arrived at Grand Marais in May, 1902 to install a cast iron post with a small oil storage house integrated into its base on the breakwater's outer end.
