The Grand Palais in Paris is the largest existing ironwork and glass structure in the world since the Crystal Palace in suburban London was burnt down.
Together with the Petit Palais (the Little Palace) the Grand Palais (the Big Palace) was built for the World’s Fair, held in Paris in 1900, as was the Eiffel Tower.
The globes that are being displayed in the Grand Palais, made for King Louis XIV [the fourteenth, 14th], are 384 cm in diameter; that is, almost four metres in diameter - ten times the diameter of that big 40 cm/16 inch globe at school.

The alteration of the Palace for the exclusive and official use of the sovereign coincided with the arrival of the new Nassau-Weilbourg dynasty in 1890.
The work undertaken by Grand Duke Adolph, which included not only the complete transformation of the existing premises, but also the building of a new wing in the courtyard, took four years to complete and was entrusted to a Brussels architect, M. The Grand Palais has been used for special exhibitions in at least the past two years.
I think it means the building as a whole - it definitely the Grand Palais as i'm paraphrasing a press release from the French Embassy and when i was in Paris in December there was one day when the Grand Palais was reopening officially and was free to go in.
The Grand Palais opened a while ago, and admission was free for a time; in fact, over the holidays, there was a carnival inside complete with a Ferris wheel under the glass roof (for €5 admission).
