Grand River Avenue is one of the principal pre-Interstate roads in the state of Michigan.
The portion of Grand River Avenue in Detroit between I 96 the intersection with Cass Avenue and Middle Street in downtown Detroit is an unsigned state trunkline, sometimes referred to as OLD BS I-96.
Grand River Avenue (not to be confused with the actual Grand River, which it parallels for much its route) starts in the very heart of downtown Detroit, where it intersects Woodward Avenue.

Westbound Grand River Avenue will be detoured north on Barnard Street, west on Clinton Street, and south on Chestnut Street to continue west on Grand River Avenue.
Eastbound Grand River Avenue will be detoured south on Chestnut Street, east on Sibley Street, and north on Barnard Street to continue east on Grand River Avenue.

Morosi said reconstruction and resurfacing of I-96 and repair and rebuilding of 47 bridges along this stretch of freeway is the largest project among the more than $200 million in road and bridge work scheduled in Detroit this year.
"Plans call for the reconstruction of I-96 from the Southfield Freeway to Grand River Avenue, the resurfacing of the freeway from Grand River Avenue to Roosevelt Street and the reconstruction of the section between Roosevelt and Warren Avenue," Morosi said.
The freeway will be closed for the demolition of the Warren Avenue Bridge over I-96 and to pave the road shoulder to serve as an additional lane during a traffic shift that should be in place by Monday.

Pine River Sentinels will be trained to collect and identify benthic macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects), used as river health indicators, and to collect river habitat information.

Originally, I-96 was multiplexed with US 16, then US 16 continued southeastward along Grand River Avenue from that interchange into downtown Detroit.
At that time, the former route of I-96 became an extension of M-102, which then followed Grand River Avenue to 8 Mile Road, where the M-5 designation then took over for M-102, which turned onto east 8 Mile Road.
