Grand River Transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grand River Transit, or GRT, is the public transport operator for the Region of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
It was named for the Grand River, which flows through the Region; the naming also echoes the Grand River Railway, a former electric railway which served the area in the early twentieth century.
The GRT fleet consists entirely of motor-buses; although the former Kitchener Transit operated trolleybuses earlier in their history, these had all been withdrawn during the 1970s, well before the systems were merged.

The collaboration between Wilfrid Laurier?s Student Union and Grand River Transit was not without its potholes, such as the initial revolt of part-time students displeased at having to pay for a service that was by and large useless to them.
Still, the initial bump in the road was dealt with and, once part-time students were removed from the agreement, their full-time counterparts generally warmed to the $40 per term fee.
Of course, without any means of identifying which students are paying tuition fees, Grand River Transit is concerned about free rides occurring in a much higher proportion than they would during the other eight months of the year, when a comparably small number of co-op students remain in Kitchener-Waterloo.

 Iowa Office of Public Transit
Local transit operations got their start in the late 1860s with street railway systems springing up in many of the larger communities of the time.
Several communities initially formed semi-autonomous "transit authorities" which had their own boards, but were still dependent on the city for funding.
Suddenly the nation's leaders saw that maintaining/rebuilding public transit could possibly reduce that dependence in some small way since, even if it didn't greatly change what most people chose to do day-to-day, it would provide an alternative way of getting folks around if there was to be another cut-off of petroleum supplies.
