In the original 1898 staging the character Jeanne de Brienne did not dance a variaiton at all, and the only male solo in all of the ballet was the third variation in the Act II 'Grand Pas d'Action', which was danced by a lone soloist (CD 2, track 7).
Minkus composed this Pas in 1881 for Petipa's revival of "Paquita" to be interpolated into Act II, along with a Pas de Trois for Act I, and a Polonaise and Mazurka for Children from the Imperial Theatre School.
The pas de deux recorded here takes place at the beginning of Act II of the ballet, in which the Sylph dances with James, and subsequently the enitre retinue of her fellow Sylphs joins in.

One reason is the enormous challenges of classical ballet repertoires for both the corps de ballet and principal dancers.
The repertoire modality in the three ballets includes grand pas de deux (consist of Entree, male and female Variations, Coda), solo variations, and others, which are among the selections of international ballet competitions.
These dazzling skills should be simultaneously balanced by the subtlety of port de bras movements along with pantomimic gestures to express the inner feelings of dancers.
