 Only Fools and Horses
Only Fools and Horses, a long-running situation comedy series concerning the misadventures of a cockney "wide boy" and his naive younger brother, was first screened by the BBC in 1981 and over the next decade became the most popular and acclaimed sitcom on British television.
Retitled Only Fools and Horses after the time honoured proverb "only fools and horses work," the first series failed to attract much attention, but the quality of the scripts and the excellence of the actors gradually won a huge devoted audience and by the mid-1980s special festive episodes topped the BBC's Christmas ratings.
The Trotter trio was completed by dotty old Grandad, played by Lennard Pearce and, after Pearce's unexpected death from a heart attack in 1984, by Grandad's brother home from the sear, Uncle Albert (played by Buster Merryfield).

A story of dodgy geezers wheeling and dealing in the fl market, and dreaming of being rich, it was an apt follow up (as Thatcher's 80s dawned) to John Sullivan's earlier comedy, 'Citizen Smith'.
In fact, one of the shows strengths is the clever, but limited use, it has made over the years of its reportoire of supporting characters, most notably Roger Lloyd-Peck's Trigger.
'Fools and Horses' no longer seems wholly in tune with the zeitgeist, and the formula appears to have been stretched to its limits - Sullivan no longer has anything new to say, and the gap between the laughs has grown.

Only Fools and Horses has been one of my favourite programs on TV ever since I first sat down and watched an episode many years ago.
Grandad, played by Lennard Pearce unfortunatly passed away in 1983 during the filming of the fourth series of the show, this meant that several episodes had to be refilmed and many fans were upset at losing a character that had been such a part of the shows first 3 series'.
Unfo rtunatly he died in 1999 and will not be in the proposed future episodes, the episodes just won't be the same without him.

The Trotter family which consisted of naive younger brother Rodney and their Grandad very soon became the best known characters on British television and 'Del Boy' became something of a national institution.
Ultimately, the misadventures of the Trotter family seems to hold the considerable distinction of being, thus far, one of the last of the genuinely 'classic' comedies produced by British television -to find a warmly welcomed place within the collective hearts of the viewing public.
By turns warm, witty, touching and hysterical, Only Fools and Horses is quite simply a prime example of world-class situation comedy at its absolute finest.
