La Grande Armée - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Grande Armée advanced into Prussian territory with the famed bataillon-carré ("battalion square") system, whereby corps marched in close supporting distances and became vanguards, rearguards, or flank forces as the situation demanded, and severely defeated the Prussian armies at the Battle of Jena and the Battle of Auerstadt, both fought on October 14, 1806.
The 125,000-strong Grande Armée marched inexorably forward, capturing the fortress of Burgos, clearing the way to Madrid at the Battle of Somosierra, and forcing the Spanish armies to retreat.
La Grande Armée had brought the Fifth Coalition to an end and the Austrian Empire lost three million citizens as a result of the treaty's border changes.

Located in the modern La Défense business district a few kilometers west of Paris, the Grande Arche was built by Danish architect Otto van Spreckelsen in 1989 for the 200th anniversary of the 1789 French revolution.
The project was ending the Parisian kilometers long perspective from the Louvre palace to La Défense including the Tuileries garden, the Concorde square, the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Avenue de la Grande Armée.
The Grande Arche complements the unique open door museum of contemporary architecture at the La Défense business district including the near-by CNIT exhibition center.

Amazon.de: Swords Around a Throne: Napoleon's Grande Armee: English Books: John R. Elting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
His description of all the various facets of the Grand Army, its way of life, the different personalities, its uniforms, weapons and just about everything else one can think of is desribed in minute detail.
It is a must for anyone interested in the Napoleonic and Revolutionary Wars in general and the Grande Armee in particular.
Epic in scope, painstakingly accurate, and romantic in its sweep and understanding of the times, it at times reads like a novel, and it is amazing to realize that these people lived, and performed the deeds told inside this the covers of this volume.

Napoleonic Books : Napoleon's Last Grande Armee : By Alfred Umhey : Dresden and Freiberg Manuscripts :
Never again would an exhausted France field a Grande Armee and so author and historian Alfred Umhey's magnificent bound volume of uniform plates from the Dresden and Freiberg manuscripts enshrines the 1813 army in pictorial history.
All up in Napoleon's Last Grande Armee there are almost 150 full-page colour uniform plates, complete with a facing page of details on the troops and a brief description of where they were serving during 1813.
Napoleon's Last Grande Armee is a glorious volume of work that presents a trove of uniform information at an unparalled level of quality.

 Military Innovations
Rather, it was the confluence of his study and aggressive instincts with a new "technology" - the Republican Army.
I hope to demonstrate that the great innovations represented by the Grande Armée gave Napoleon a tool that fit perfectly with his emphasis on speed, maneuver, and maintaining the offensive (and conversely, influenced his thinking to include that emphasis).
I will begin by examining the state of the Grande Armée prior to his assumption of command as well as some of its innovations that provided the foundations for his transformation of strategy.

Military History Online - Napoleon's Last Grande Armée: Eyewitness Portraits from the 1813 Campaign
During the summer armistice of the 1813 campaign, two German artists drew illustrations of the French troops stationed around Dresden and Freiberg in Saxony.
This is followed by a history of "The Dresden Manuscript", the Situation of the Grand Armée during August 1815 (with a great map), "How the Plates are Presented", and then the actual plates themselves.
The watercolors of the uniforms that are shown are from the two artists Brun and Winkler and organized by The Freiburg Manuscript and the Dresden Manuscript.

La Grande Armee, which I read in the fall of 2000.
Combined arms divisions had used before, but Napoleon distilled the practice further to form ”corps d’ armee.” Ideally, an army corps was strong enough to fight an independent action and hold off a foe for a day or two, thus allowing other corps to come up and assist.
La Grande Armee was trying to retreat from Moscow via a different route than the advance had come over.

In 1806 Napoleon Bonaparte launched his Grande Armee at a Prussia clamouring for war against the French emperor.
Another aspect I really liked about The Campaigns of La Grande Armee: 1806 is the importance of fatigue upon troops and if you march your men hard then you will lose an increasing number of them as stragglers.
I can heartily recommend The Campaigns of La Grande Armee: 1806 to gamers who want to really test their mettle as a true commander of Napoleonic Era armies.

Fast-Play Grande Armée (FPGA) is a complete revision of the original game, streamlined and simplified so that a handful of people can play the very largest battle scenarios to completion in a few hours with virtually no paperwork.
Some people consider it an "introductory" version of Grande Armée, but in fact it has a number of different systems that are related to, or derived from "regular" GA, but are not the same.
FPGA does not use any unit rosters, and in fact base-labels are no longer necessary.

"La Grande Armee" is set apart from those works since it focuses on the men who fought and died for Napoleon.
The book covers the campaigns of the Grand Army from the thwarted attempt to invade England (1805) to Waterloo (1815.) "La Grande Armee" does an excellent job of delving into the life of the average grunt: the disease, the pillaging, the marches, even the horde of prostitutes that followed in the army's wake.
'La Grande Armee"'s greatest strength are the details it presents: from the tactic of Russian playing dead on the battlefield and then getting up to shoot the advancing French in the backs is hard to ignore.

This study of the artillery of the Grande Armée will be limited to that deployed with the field armies during the period.
What was developed, and soon became known as the Gribeauval system, was an entirely new family of field artillery, consisting of 4-, 8-, and 12-pounder guns; a new 6-inch howitzer, and the ancillary equipment to support and maintain them in the field.

 Swords Around a Throne
Skillfully drawing on a vast array of historical sources, Elting colorfully brings into focus the life of the Grande Armée: its origins and development, command system, organization, combat arms and services, logistics, weapons, tactics, discipline, and its ultimate collapse.
Sharing the experiences of the men (andwomen) who served in, services, and supported this awesome military force, the reader meets the Emperor himself, his extraordinary officers such as Berthier, Caulaincourt, New, and others, as well as the ordinary Frenchmen and foreigners who, impued with the Armée's unique fighting spirit, followed its eagles.
Swords Around a Throne, the result of three decades of scholarly research in the Napoleonic era in general and its military history in particular, is certain to be the definitive volume on the Grande Armée for decades to come.
