The tropical moist forest of this ecoregion is generally subdivided into lowland rain forests of the Loyalty Islands and Grand Terre, the montane forests of Grand Terre, and Grand Terre's wet maquis forest.

Grande Terre is almost completely surrounded by a barrier reef which borders a lagoon of clear, rather shallow water covering 16,000 sq.km and varying in width from about one km to 25 km.
Grande Terre itself is very elongate in shape, being about 400 km long (from northwest to southeast) but only 50 km wide.
This elongate shape is due to the presence of a mountainous spine with an average altitude of 1,000 m.

It is about 50 minutes driving time from the airport, on the north end of Basse Terre.
The only beach within walking distance is Plage de Grande Anse, which is one of the nicest large beaches on the island, although there are several smaller beaches within a short driving distance.
Based on value-for-price we would recommend HGA if you can speak and understand a bit of French and want to be away from the hustle and bustle of Pointe-a-Pitre/Gosier.

The names seem to be a contradiction, with the smaller Grande-Terre being called the big land, until you realize that the original names described the trade winds and not the geography.
These air currents come from the northeast, blowing with great force (grande) over the smaller part of the island and being held back by the mountains in the west, where the winds are "flat" (basse).
To follow a scenic route toward this beach, drive the narrow winding roads through les Grands Fonds (the big valleys) in the undulating center of the island.

Basse Terre is very different then Grande Terre as far as the beaches go.
The beach grande anse was a 5 min walk from the hotel.
Plus it's only 1 hour from pointe a pitre and 1 hour and a half from the beaches of Grande Terre.
