The mountain's backcountry is accessible by a network of hiking trails that run through this private preserve owned by Grandfather Mountain, Inc. The trails on Grandfather offer a variety of hiking options, from easy walks through beautiful hardwood forests to rugged hikes to the highest point on the mountain, 5,964-foot Calloway Peak.
The mountain is also a good place for birding, offering migratory birds in the spring such as Canada and Blackburnian warblers, rose-breasted grosbeak, and scarlet tanager, and migrating broad-winged hawks in the fall.

It was late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning when Grandfather Mountain's wind gauge got stuck at 200 mph, where it tops out.
One problem with the equipment at Grandfather Mountain, the experts say, is that the wind gauge is mounted on the visitors center's roof, which they say is a no-no, because of the way that location affects wind speed.

I had always heard what great Games were put on at Grandfather Mountain with huge crowds, fine hospitality and wonderful receptions, but the kicker was the awful traffic jams getting up and down the mountain for the Games on Saturday and Sunday.
Deep down, the Grandfather Games were at the top of the list of games I’d like to attend but knew I never would because of the traffic.
