Hans Christian Andersen: Grandmother   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Grandmother knows a great deal, for she was alive before father and mother—that’s quite certain.
Yes, she is smiling at the memory of that day, and many thoughts and recollections of the past; but the handsome young man is gone, and the rose has withered in the old book, and grandmother is sitting there, again an old woman, looking down upon the withered rose in the book.
Ours will once again behold dear grandmother, young and beautiful as when, for the first time, she kissed the fresh, red rose, that is now dust in the grave.

Hans Christian Andersen : Grandmother :: www.andersen.sdu.dk :: The Hans Christian Andersen Center
Grandmother is so very old; she has so many wrinkles, and her hair is completely white, but her eyes shine just like two stars; yes, yet they are much more beautiful; they are so gentle, so wonderful to look into.
In the middle of the book is a rose, which is very flat and dry, and not nearly so lovely as the roses she has in the vase, yet she smiles at it the most sweetly of all, and the tears even come into her eyes.
Why, every time her tears fall upon the rose its colors become fresh again; the rose swells and fills the whole room with its perfume; the walls sink as if they were made of mist, and all about her is the green, beautiful wood, with the summer sunlight streaming through the leaves of the trees.

Central Europe Review - Bozena Nemcova's The Grandmother
Bozena Nemcova's Babicka (The Grandmother, 1855), together with Macha's Maj and K J Erben's Kytice, is perhaps the best known and best loved work in all of Czech literature.
In fact, the book is so much a part of the national consciousness that almost every portrayal of a grandmother in film, on stage or in a book is influenced, and to some extent overshadowed, by Nemcova's heroine.
There are many such sad or tragic events in Babicka, and all woven into the story with equal skill: the story of Viktorka, the flood that devastates the homes in the valley and surrounding area, Grandmother's painful recollections of war and the loss of her husband.
