In the 19th century the canton of Vaud was an outspoken opponent of the Catholic separatist movement (Sonderbund).

The old historical dialects of Romonsch and Ladin (nearly confined to the canton of the Grisons, q.v.) enjoy no political recognition by the Confederation, are largely maintained by artificial means in the shape of societies founded for their preservation, and are not even in the majority (which is German) in the Grisons.
The number of goats has remained pretty steady (359,913 in 1906 to 375,482 in 1866, the maximum, 416,323, being attained in 1886), but that of sheep has decreased from 447,001 in 1866 to 209,443 in 1906.
Tobacco is grown to a certain extent, especially near Payerne in the Broye valley (Vaud) and in Ticino, while more recently beetroot has been cultivated for the purpose of manufacturing sugar.

 Church of St-Jean-Baptiste, Grandson
The Romanesque church of St-Jean-Baptiste is all that remains of the former Benedictine monastery which was founded in Grandson in 1049.
After the Burgundian wars, Grandson was ruled by Berne and Fribourg and, as a consequence of the Reformation, the monastery was finally dissolved in 1554.
In the Battle of Grandson the Confederates gained their first victory on March 2, 1478 over Duke Karl the Bold of Burgundy, who lost all his artillery and a great deal of treasure which can now be seen in the Historical Museum of Berne.

A village on the lakeshore some 4km north of Yverdon, GRANDSON resonates in the mind of every Swiss schoolchild as the location of one of the three greatest victories ever won by a Swiss army.
Although a tower was built by Adalbert of Grandson as early as 1050, the main buildings date from 1281, when Otto I of Grandson returned from the Eighth Crusade wealthy enough to build a new castle, a Franciscan cloister in the village and a Carthusian monastery further along the lake near Concise.
The château at Grandson, meanwhile, faded from central importance, passing between the governments of Bern, Fribourg and Canton Vaud until its rejuvenation as a museum in the 1980s.

Stung by his embarrassing defeat by the Swiss Confederation at Grandson in March 1476, Charles, Duke of Burgundy rebuilt his routed but otherwise mainly intact army at Lausanne.
By the end of May he once again felt ready to march against the Confederates to recover his territories and fortifications in the Pays de Vaud (North of Geneva) then march on attack the city of Berne, his greatest enemy among the cantons.
An initial assault was repulsed by a heavy barrage of fire from light guns mounted on the walls (which had ironically been captured at Grandson three months previously!), but two great bombards used by the Burgundians were slowly reducing the walls to rubble.
