Grange Hill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grange Hill is a British children's television drama series which is shown on BBC One.
The drama is centred on a fictional comprehensive school (called Grange Hill), in north London (although when filming moved to Liverpool in 2003, it ceased to have any specific location), and follows the lives of the children as they progress through school.
Grange Hill broke new ground by the inclusion of a gay teacher, Mr Brisley, who was in the cast from 1992 to 1999.

 Grange Hill
Grange Hill is a successful children's soap opera set in a fictional East London comprehensive school.
Throughout the years, Grange Hill has explored this theme, the idea that children engage with and are affected by politics even though the public tries to protect them or deny their interest in social matters.
This series was neither as popular as nor as controversial as Grange Hill largely because it was shown against the early evening news on both BBC 1 and ITV.

 GRANGE HILL OVERVIEW
Grange Hill is one of the most successful television children's dramas of all time.
Grange Hill has been running for over 20 years and many of the actors have gone on to star in other well known programmes such as Brookside, ER and Eastenders.
Unfortunately Grange Hill in Y2K is a pale shadow of its former self: with plot lines too predictable, too many weak characters, and too much emphasis on political correctness.

 Television Heaven
Grange Hill began life in 1975 when ATV comedy writer Phil Redmond, who had just finished contributing scripts for season three of the children's sitcom The Kids from 47A, approached the various Independent Television companies with an idea for a series set in a modern comprehensive school.
From the off Grange Hill went for sensitive, true-life situations, it's first 'issue' being one of racial prejudice as young Benny (Terry Sue Patt) is referred to by one student as a 'golly'.
One irate viewer wrote to the BBC to say that she was disgusted by the series...'This is not entertainment' she wrote, '...but a glamorisation of hooliganism and the abominable attitude of children to their teachers'.

Grange Hill still continues to shock; in 2001 parents were not happy the show was covering rape, racism and lesbianism.
The on-screen explanation for the disappearance of the 2002 uniform, according to Grange Hill.com, was that parents complained the new garments were unsuitable for day-to-day wear and the school's governors decided, in the wake of the fire, to revert to the old uniform.

Grange Hill reached the height of its popularity in the mid 1980s.
Grange Hill's most formidable rival came in the form of Byker Grove, the Newcastle youth club series first shown on the BBC in September 1989.
Grange Hill now pulls in just a third of the viewers it had in the 1980s, this may seem like a drastic decline but this is very good in today's multi-channel age.
