 | | The movement grew rapidly during the early 1870s, feeding on agrarian economic distress, and by 1875 its membership had reached 850,000. |
 | | During the 1880s, because of improved agricultural conditions, membership dropped to 150,000, and the revolt moved to the South and West, where it became involved with the Farmers' Alliance movement. |
