If it wasn't well known that Granny Weatherwax was tough, anyone might have thought she had just had the shock of her life and was practically desperate to take part in a bit of ordinary everyday bickering.
Granny Weatherwax had nothing against trolls but she felt instinctively that if more trolls stopped wearing suits and walking upright, and went back to living under bridges and jumping out * Many of the more traditional dwarf tribes have no female pronouns, like 'she' or 'her'.
One thing about Granny Weatherwax's broomstick - it was one of the very old-fashioned ones, built in the days when broomsticks * Nanny Ogg sent a number of cards home to her family, not a single one of which got back before she did.

Terry Pratchett - Equal Rites excerpt
Granny was old and tired and not entirely clear about things after a long day, but to survive as a witch requires an ability to jump to very large conclusions and as she stared at the staff in the flames and heard the scream her hands were already reaching for the big fl kettle.
Granny took the child in her arms and tried to comfort her; she wasn't sure how one went about it, but a distracted patting on the back and vague reassuring noises seemed to work, and the screams became wails and, eventually, sobs.
Granny didn't mingle her thoughts with the bees very often, partly because insect minds were strange, alien things that tasted of tin, but mostly because she suspected that the Swarm was a good deal more intelligent than she was.

To say that Granny weatherwax has a powerful personality would be a huge understatement and a fatal one were she ever to hear anyone say it.
Although Granny has all the characteristics of a bad witch she has always come down on the side of good however there are several people who would disagree with that analysis.
Granny Weatherwax is definitly the unspoken leader of the three witches.

Granny is a traditional witch; she doesn't hold with living in towns and selling love potions and other sundry matters.
Granny Weatherwax, the town witch who delivered young Esk, knows that the girl must now learn to control the extraordinary powers she has been bequeathed before they start to control her.
As Granny sees it, wizardry is high magic composed of science, "jommetry" and power, while witchcraft is a magic grounded in nature, herbs and "headology." Esk feels she can handle either type of magic and she turns wizardry on its ear as she proceeds to demonstrate what she can accomplish.

You don't tell Granny Weatherwax that anything is impossible for her to do, though, nor do you tell her you need her help, not unless you don't want her to come.
Granny's character is especially well-developed in this novel, and the new-found insights into her childhood offer quite a telling new insight into her personality.
Granny Weatherwax is one of my favorite Discworld characters, combining an acid tongue with Socratic wisdom - tough as nails and proud of it.

It was one of the few sorrows of Granny Weatherwax's life that, despite all her efforts she'd arrive at the peak of her career with a complexion like a rosy apple and all her teeth.
A problem, however, was that Granny saw every flight simple as a straight line from A to B and was unable to get alongside the idea that other users of the air might have any rights whatsoever; the flight migration patterns of an entire continent had been changed because of that simple fact.
Grany Weatherwax had nothing against trolls but she felt instinctively that if more trolls stopped wearing suits and walking upright, and went back to living under bridges and jumping out and eating people,as nature intended, then the world would be a happier place.

she offered the same to granny but granny could see the cost (the elf queen would control you) and was not willing to pay that way, her way she only owe's herself and the witch who trained her (and that don't count).
It may well be that Granny has had to work harder than some to gain her current mastery, but it is repeatedly emphasised throughout the novels that she is the most powerful and highly respected witch in the Ramtops.
Granny having an extraordinary aptitude for magic is not inherently contradictory with Granny not having an extraordinary "spark" of magic.

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
The effect that one's elders can have on you and your life, even after they've gone, is presented with marvelous effect by a series of mini-flashbacks where Tiffany remembers a series of relevant episodes involving her Granny Aching, a woman who took a decidedly unique and effective approach to shepherding.
The power of Granny Aching is quite evident, as is her similarity to Granny Weatherwax, Pratchett's more well-known witch, but at the same time she is different enough to not feel like a recycled character.
There are also those who might say that Tiffany may be a representation of what Granny Weatherwax may have been like when she was younger, but she is most definitely her own person...it is difficult to believe that Granny Weatherwax would have ever taken some of the attitudes that Tiffany does as her character advances.

Once upon a time there was a fairy godmother named Desiderata who had a good heart, a wise head, and poor planning skills--which unforunately left the Princess Emberella in the care of her other (not quite so good and wise) godmother when DEATH came for Desiderata.
So now it's up to Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg to hop on broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl doesn't marry the Prince.
