 Grant City, Staten Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally known as Frenchtown, the community was renamed in honor of Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant soon after the conflict began, despite the fact that the war itself was so unpopular on Staten Island that the island was the scene of anti-draft riots in July of 1863.
The community has a station on the Staten Island Railway named after it, and the station immediately to the north is located at and named Jefferson Avenue, this street generally regarded as the boundary between Grant City and neighboring Dongan Hills.
Grant City and the neighborhoods surrounding it are also very conservative politically, with the Republican Party candidates for virtually all elected offices routinely carrying these neighborhoods by large majorities.

Staten Island’s economy has grown in recent years, in large part because it is insulated from the economic volatility experienced in other boroughs, State Comptroller Alan Hevesi said in a report released today that examines the state of economic development and the overall economy in Staten Island.
Staten Island’s economy is focused on the local market, with 28.7 percent of the borough’s jobs in the health services and social assistance sector and 18 percent in retail trade.
Hevesi noted, “Staten Island is benefiting from public and private sector investments throughout the borough, including the remediation and redevelopment of the Fresh Kills landfill and the transformation of the St. George waterfront into a dynamic entertainment destination.

Originally was called Staten Eylandt by the Dutch after the Dutch governing body, The Dutch found themselves having to buy this sixty square mile island a total of five time first settled the island in 1661 along with a group of Huguenots.
The Dutch surrendered Staten Island to the English in 1664, who in turn made the final purchase of the Island in 1670 from the Indians.
Staten Island has been cited as a most exciting source of historical information in that the borough contains more historical structures dating back to the seventeenth century than does any other in the city.

 Lessons Learned from FIPSE Projects III   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In this project, College of Staten Island faculty worked with two high schools, one in Staten Island and one in Brooklyn, both with even smaller percentages of students earning the Regents Diploma than is average for the City.
The grant allowed a second group to have this experience as freshmen and to continue it into the sophomore and junior years.
Enthusiasm for the program in the Staten Island high school is such that the entire school is adopting the Discovery program.

grants are for programs that will educate area students and residents about the New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuary, foster stewardship of its resources and improve its environmental quality.

There are presently 3057 grants in the database.
This project proposes to disseminate a previous FIPSE project in which faculty from the College of Staten Island’s Discovery Center worked with high school teachers to develop integrated, discovery-based sets of curricular activities designed to help average students graduate with an academic diploma without need for remediation in college.
This was a new project (College Now) within the City University of New York, of which the College of Staten Island is a part, to work with local high schools to help improve academic achievement and eliminate the need for remediation when students enter college.
