Grant Hackett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grant George Hackett (born May 9, 1980) is an Australian swimmer who won the men's 1500 metres freestyle race at both the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, making him one of Australia's greatest ever distance swimmers, perhaps the greatest distance swimmer the sport has ever seen.
Hackett was born at Southport on the Gold Coast of Queensland, and first achieved prominence on debut at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships, where he first won the 1500 meters.
Hackett was awarded this honour, and lead Australia in the World Championships at Montreal, Canada.

Grant later in the meet astounded the crowds when racing in the 4X200m freestyle, for his club Miami, he swam the first leg and broke the 200m World record with a time of 1:46.67, clipping 0.02 off the time set by Giorgio Lamberti.

Hackett's record took the spotlight away from Michael Phelps and overshadowed a remarkable performance by German doctor Mark Warnecke, who became the oldest world champion in history.

One of the true superstars of world swimming, Grant Hackett offered few surprises at the Olympic trials, cruising to gold in the 1,500m freestyle final and also winning the 400m in the absence of the disqualified Ian Thorpe.
It would have been a shock if Hackett had been beaten in his pet event - scourers of statistics must travel back in time to 1997 to find the last time he was bested over the longest distance in swimming.
Perhaps it is this one-sided dominance which drives Hackett in his perennial challenging of Ian Thorpe in the 400m and 200m.
