Grant Hart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grant Hart (born March 18, 1961) was the drummer and with Bob Mould one of two main singer/songwriters for Hüsker Dü, a pioneering punk rock group from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.
The band dissolved after a show in Columbia, Missouri, during which Hart was unable to carry his drumming and vocal duties due to heroin sickness.
In 2004 Hart and Mould reunited at the benefit concert for Karl Mueller, the bassist for fellow Minneapolis stalwarts, Soul Asylum, who was then fighting what would turn out to be a losing battle with cancer.

Hüsker Dü - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hart and Mould bonded over a shared love of the Ramones, and soon after enlisted Norton and Pine to form a band.
In a 1984 interview, Hart reports that Hüsker Dü had their origins in a group called Three Guys With Skinny Ties (presumably a new wave ensemble, given the fondness of musicians in that genre of slender neckties).
Hart and Norton's tone throughout the interview seems tongue in cheek; they offer slightly absurd, gently antagonistic replies, perhaps calling into question the honesty of their statements.

 TrouserPress.com :: Grant Hart
Although Mould vented the depths of his disillusion and anger on 1989's Workbook, Hart got in the first work on the plucky title track of a 1988 three-song 12-inch, painting the split in terms of a couple's first apartment — the number of which just happened to coincide with the band's office/studio address.
(Hart denied that was his intent but few believed him.) In any case, "2541" is a toouchingly sad acoustic folk-rock number with a typically catchy melody.
A moving description of Hart's pain as well as an assertion of his survival, Intolerance — a simply played one-man band solo project that avoids familiarity by using '60s-style organ as the most prominent rhythm instrument — deals with more than one traumatic aspect of his life.

They are often expressed through new musical outlets, however, and it takes time to adapt to the image of Grant Hart on a boat, in pirate outfit, whipping out a sea shanty about his misfortunes.
combines the energized rock of Hart's Hüsker Dü days; the guitars take a more prominent place in the mix, and the lyrics are more direct, relying less on the frequently complex metaphors that historical events provided in his other solo work.
Whatever the case, the Good News For Modern Man is that Hart's musical output cannot yet be fully grasped, with this and all his future records sure to reaffirm, to anyone who cares, that his is a voice that fucking matters.

Hart, who quit or was fired (depending on which of the two conflicting accounts you choose to believe), took little time to regroup, and was the first of the two to release records under his own name.
However, this was just one episode in Hart's evidently troubled life which he used the record to address, with other subjects including his well-publicized travails with hard drugs ("The Main") and the suicide of Hsker D manager Dave Savoy in 1987 ("She Can See The Angels Coming").
Hart resurrected a band format at the end of 1989 with the unveiling of Nova Mob (nothing to do with the 70s Liverpool band that included Julian Cope and Pete Wylie).

Julian Cope Presents Head Heritage | Unsung | Reviews | Grant Hart - Intolerance
Grant Hart is of course best known as the drummer / co-leader of super-influental 80's punk power trio Husker Du.
Grant's first post-Husker outting was recorded for SST, the legendary American punk label that Husker Du had recorded for from 1983 until their jump to the majors in 1986, but the label was beginning to fall on hard times by that point and the "grunge" thing was still two or three years away.
It's a shame, because Grant Hart was an equal to Bob Mould in terms of singing and songwriting and as co-producer of all the classic Husker albums he was unarguably a very influential figure on the whole 80's indie scene and especially the early 90's when that scene was commercialized into a full-blown fad.
