The parish seat is Colfax and as of 2000, the population is 18,698.
In the parish the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

 Grant Parish History
Grant Parish was one of the “Reconstruction” parishes of Northwest Louisiana.
The land of Grant Parish was adaptable to either the growing of sugar cane or cotton, and the demand for slaves became greater as they were needed to clear the land.
Louisiana, because of the steamboat, was to rise to the position of being the second in wealth of the then existent states of the union and the people of Grant Parish were receiving their share just prior to the Civil War.

Land grants along the river were in great demand and the western part of the parish grew first.
Since the early history of the parish, the chief factors influencing its growth have been its streams, waterways, pine forests, and its strategic location at the "crossroads of Louisiana." Early industries in Grant Parish were tobacco, indigo, cotton and sugar, with markets in Montgomery and Pineville.
