 Contract Awarded On Grant County Road Project Proposed Several Years Ago
The students' questions culminated Tuesday in a contract to repave the southern half of Red Hill Road, from the junction of U.S. 81 and U.S. 64 west of Pond Creek, at Four Corners, north almost five miles.
Brawley and Grant County Commissioner Jerry Shaffer of Pond Creek said the 22-foot-wide county road will be paved with a layer of asphaltic concrete 6 to 7 inches thick.
Improvement of the popular route is being financed through the cooperative efforts of Shaffer and fellow Grant County Commissioner Ted Moore of Medford, and the Department of Transportation.

This portion of the road does not appear on the Arizona Territory Map of 1881 although it is on the 1883 map.
The force behind the construction of this road was the awarding of all military freighting to Norton and Stewart by the quartermaster in 1881.

 Crews will alter creek’s course - March 25, 2005
Grant Road is wedged between Jackson Creek and Bob Reeves’ house, but because creeks usually win turf battles, the county has been forced to inch the road closer to his property to avoid it being undercut by the creek.
With a 14-foot drop into the creek bed, county road crews have struggled to keep the paved, two-lane road passable, even having to push the center line of the road several feet to the west because of erosion.
Hurn said the county considered moving Grant Road to the west, but figured that land acquisition and potentially razing homes would prove far too expensive.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to remove the reversible rush-hour lane on Grant Road between Swan Road and Stone Avenue by the end of June.

At the Regional Transportation Authority's public meeting Sept. 27, a key topic was the proposed widening of Grant Road between Swan and Oracle.
The widening of Grant Road would add two lanes for a total of six.
On Tucson's other six-lane roads, there are frequent bottlenecks at major intersections, especially where the traffic lights haven't been timed effectively or the feeder roads haven't been improved.
