Bob Faiss, Sawyer's law partner and executive assistant when he was governor, said Bette Sawyer will be best known for being the first in Nevada history to compile the stories and the careers of the wives of Nevada's governors and the role they played in the development of the state.

At the time I was city editor for the Sun, that was the year of the election of Grant Sawyer, who ran on a campaign of making sure that only reputable people were licensed and that the industry was operating in a reputable manner.
So (Sawyer) was in a position of defending it and the state from outside forces, such as the attempt by Bobby Kennedy to have a massive federal raid on all of the casinos.
Grant Sawyer has a lot to thank for that, because he took the governor out of the system.
