Michigan was a pioneer state in creating the American educational system; she began the organization of it at the time of her admission into the Union in 1837, and has since been noted for the high standard of her schools.

 Michigan Lighthouses
Michigan is the only state that supports lighthouse preservation with a program of annual grants from the state to local preservation groups.
Most of the light station was conveyed to Huron County in 1935 and 1958; the lighthouse itself was transferred to county ownership in June 2003.
The light station was leased to Alcona County in 1982; volunteers of the Alcona County Historical Society have restored the keeper's house as a maritime museum.

The St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) is working in conjunction with 13 local units of government to develop a 54-mile paved trail from Lakeport State Park to New Baltimore.
Clair County helps plan and promote the trail while each local unit of government is responsible for constructing their section of the trail.
Grant money for the trail has been provided by the United States government through the Transportation Equity Act for the Twenty-first Century (TEA-21), and by the State of Michigan through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF).

Michigan's Volunteer River, Stream, and Creek Cleanup Program (VRSCCP) provides small grants in the range of $500 to $5,000 to local units of government to help implement cleanup of trash and debris within or along the banks of rivers, streams, and creeks to improve the waters in Michigan.
Grant applications were received, reviewed and assessed by Great Lakes Commission and DEQ staff in winter 2006; award notices went out to grantees in late April.
To remove trash and garbage from the banks of the Huron River and to reposition woody debris damming flow under railroad trestles for a three-mile section of the Huron River.

The Township has long had a strong commitment, through its evolving land use policies and practices, to protect and preserve its natural resources, which are highly valued by Township residents and add to their quality of life.
Based on these findings, it became evident to the Township that it cannot fully succeed in its goal of protecting natural resource systems unless native plants are more commonly used for landscaping and greater efforts are made to preserve existing native vegetation.
Although the native plants listed in the database are drawn primarily from field inventories conducted in Springfield Township, many of these plants are also native to other southeast Michigan communities and to areas with topography, soils and climate similar to Springfield Township.

She was predeceased in death by her husband and an infant son, born in 1937.
