Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Ulysses S. Grant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio, 25 miles (40 km) east of Cincinnati on the Ohio River, to Jesse Grant and Hannah Simpson.
Grant was initially angry at Thomas that his orders for a demonstration were exceeded, but the assaulting wave sent the Confederates into a head-long retreat, opening the way for the Union to invade Atlanta, Georgia, and the heart of the Confederacy.
Grant was the first general to attempt such a coordinated strategy in the war and the first to understand the concepts of total war, in which the destruction of an enemy's economic infrastructure that supplied its armies was as important as tactical victories on the battlefield.

M3 Lee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though typical of tanks of many nations when first produced in 1939, by the time the US entered the war the M2 design was obsolete with only a 37 mm gun, about 30 mm armor, and a very high silhouette.
The tank design was unusual in that the main weapon, a larger caliber, lower-velocity 75 mm gun was in an offset sponson mounting in the hull, with consequent limited traverse.
In each case, two weapons were mounted to give the tanks adequate capability in firing both anti-personnel high explosive ammunition (which needed to contain large amount of explosives) and armor-piercing ammunition for anti-tank combat (with efficiency depending on a kinetic energy of the projectile).

The only difference between the Grant (which came first) and Lee models was that the Lee, in addition to the massive arsenal of the Grant, also had an independently rotatable cupola atop the turret with a machine gun in it.
The M3 Grant was put on "substitute standard" (read "back-burner") status in 1941 when the M4 Sherman was standardized and was declared obsolete in 1944, long after it had been superceded by the superior M4.
The Sherman variant that truly surpassed even German heavy tanks was the Sherman Firefly, a British variant mounting the massive 17-pounder gun, which, with its far longer barrel, made the 75mm snubnose look like the popgun it truly was late in the war.
