The segments are 1.9 metres in diameter, 8 centimetres thick, weigh 470 kilos and are made of Zerodur™, a vitreous ceramic material extraordinarily uniform in composition that undergoes virtually no change as temperatures fluctuate.
Grantecan selected Schott because of the German company’s leading position as a producer of optical glass products, vitreous ceramics like Zerodur™ and everyday materials like Ceran™, which is used in ceramic cooker hobs.
Grantecan, the public company responsible for building the telescope, has specified an expansion coefficient of 0.050 microns / metre.

The revised charge of our committee is to advise on the strategic situation of observational astronomy in Israel in the context of the proposal for participation in GranTeCan and to examine possible alternative ways of obtaining access to large optical/infrared telescopes for Israeli astronomers.
CONSIDERATION OF OPTIONS Although the Committee was presented with a single option for the provision of large telescope access (namely a share in the GranTeCan telescope at present near completion in the Canary Islands), it is helpful to contrast the merits of this option against alternatives.
The GranTeCan (GTC) is a 10 meter segmented mirror telescope being constructed on the Canary Island of La Palma (Spain).

The latest generation of giant telescopes is going to expand the size of the known universe by an order of magnitude.
To succeed in this task, enormous structures such as teh Gran Telescope of Canarias (GranTeCan) which are 30 mt tall, 20 mt wide and with mass in the several hundred tons, need to be controlled in position and speed with submicron accuracy, responding in real time to large random perturntions such as wind buffeting.
The experience acqured in the control of large, flexible structures with direct drives shows large direct drive to be a very viable, cost competitive and super performing approach which will likely supersed large rack and pinion, bbogie or friction drives un multimeter diameter position control.

In the short to medium term, the Spanish 10-m GranTeCan, a Keck-type telescope currently under construction, offers the potential for collaboration and ultimately for the UK community to gain more access to large telescopes in the northern hemisphere.
Participation in GranTeCan would also allow the UK astronomers and engineers to gain valuable hands-on experience in segmented mirror technology and position the UK well for future development of any Extremely Large Telescope.
The development of the La Palma observatory in a European context is currently being discussed at various levels: - A joint European operation of medium sized telescopes may well emerge as the future umbrella required to retain the INT and JKT.

of March 1994 called the Gran Telescopio de Canarias, S.A. (known as GRANTECAN.) This non-profit making organisation was created with the aim of providing the IAC with the necessary resources to develop the large telescope project.
The initial design of this large telescope, similar to other designs of the eighties, was based on a primary monolithic mirror of 8 metres.
These sensors needed to enable the perfect alignment of all 36 mirrors so that the optical characteristics achieved were equivalent to those of a monolithic mirror of 10 metres.
