  Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle
Comely of person, speaking seven languages, liberal, of an even disposition, unswervingly faithful to his masters, possessing great political penetration, and of an astonishing activity, Granvelle was moreover a generous and enlightened patron of arts and letters.
Worldly and ostentatious, and more than once accused of laxity of morals, Granvelle possessed the qualities and defects of a prelate of the Renaissance, with a superiority of intellect and sense of his duties as a statesman which deserve respect.
His correspondence has been edited partly in France by Weiss, "Les papiers d'état de Granvelle" (9 vols., 4to, 1841-52), partly in Belgium, "La correspondence du cardinal Granvelle" (12 vols., 4to, 1878-96), the first three volumes by E. Poullet, the remainder by Ch.

Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (August 20, 1517 - September 21, 1586) was one of the most influential of the church leaders during the time which immediately followed the appearance of Protestantism in Europe.
In the following year he conducted the negotiations for the marriage of Mary I of England and Philip II of Spain, to whom, in 1555, on the abdication of the emperor, he transferred his services, and by whom he was employed in the Netherlands.
In April 1559 Granvelle was one of the Spanish commissioners who arranged the Peace of Cateau Cambrésis, and on Philip’s withdrawal from the Netherlands in August of the same year he was appointed prime minister to the regent, Margaret of Parma.

In the spring of 1564 the constitutional opposition of the great nobles to the policy of the king appeared to be successful.
Granvelle was withdrawn, the Consulta abolished, and Orange, Egmont and Hoorn took their seats once more on the Council.
Granvelle had gone, but the royal policy was unchanged.

Granvelle, who was both Philip and Margaret when either had to address or to respond to the world at large, did not always find it necessary to regulate the correspondence of his puppets between themselves.
She recognized Granvelle's great capacity, experience, zeal, and devotion--for all which qualities she made much of him--while on the other hand she felt that it would be a great inconvenience, and might cause a revolt of the country, were she to retain him in the Netherlands against the will of the seigniors.
Granvelle was, for the moment, triumphant, Orange, Egmont, and Horn had abandoned the state council, Philip could not yet make up his mind to yield to the storm, and Alva howled defiance at the nobles and the whole people of the Netherlands.

The Habsburg dynasty is the unifying factor in Claudia Banz’s study of the patronage of Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, later Cardinal and from 1550 political advisor to Charles V and then Philip II, and the Archdukes Albert and Isabella, son-in-law and daughter of Philip II who from 1598 served as Regents in the Spanish Netherlands.
For Granvelle emulating royal patronage was a means of overcoming the humiliation of stemming from a minor noble family, of demonstrating his cultural and aesthetic taste and his superiority over the Netherlandish nobility.
The princely aspirations of Granvelle are rejected by the Archdukes who, so Banz’s conclusion, adopted a policy of commissioning ‘down-to-earth’ art which emphasised their identification with their Netherlandish subjects and thereby improve the reputation of the Habsburg dynasty so tarnished by political and religious events.

Granvelle, on the other hand, entertained a gentle contempt for Egmont, which manifested itself in all his private letters to the King, and was sufficiently obvious in his deportment.
Granvelle was the most politic of men, and the Prince had not served his apprenticeship at the court of Charles the Fifth to lay himself bare prematurely to the criticism or the animosity of the Cardinal with the recklessness of Horn and Egmont.
Granvelle, who was said to have been influential in arranging his first marriage, now proposed to him, after the year of mourning had expired, an alliance with Mademoiselle Renee, daughter of the Duchess de Lorraine, and granddaughter of Christiern the Third of Denmark, and his wife Isabella, sister of the Emperor Charles the Fifth.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle
As member of the Council of State of the Low Countries he was the most valued counsellor of the regent, Margaret of Parma; apropos of this it must be remembered that when leaving the country
Philip II recommended his sister to refer all important affairs to a council of three, one of whom should be Granvelle.
Accordingly Granvelle was "authorized to visit his mother in Burgundy" (1564).

The regent Margaret, humiliated by the ascendancy of Granvelle, and trembling at the catastrophe to which his rigour was driving matters, proposed that the States should be summoned, in order to concert measures for restoring the tranquillity of the nation.
As she now heartily hated Granvelle, her representations confirmed those of Orange, although, reared as she had been in the school of Loyola, she still maintained the semblance of confidence in and affection for the cardinal.
All were delighted at the cardinal’s new-sprung affection for his mother, and trusted that it would not cool as suddenly as it had arisen;4 in short, that “the red fellow,” as they termed him, had taken a final leave of the country.

Both the Regent and Granvelle urged the withdrawal of the Spanish troops ; and it was by their action that the regiments, which had been marched from the frontiers to the island of Walcheren, were, without awaiting direct orders from Madrid, embarked for the Mediterranean.
Cardinal Granvelle (he had obtained the hat in February, 1561) was not at heart a persecutor ; he did not believe, nor did Viglius, in the efficacy of repressing opinions by brute force and cruelty; and they would, if left to themselves, have exercised a politic discretion and moderation in inflicting punishment.
Granvelle asked leave to visit his mother, whom he had not seen for nineteen years, and on March 13, accompanied by his brother, the Count of Chantonnay, and a brilliant suite, he left Brussels, never to return.

In 1538 appeared Mercator's map of the world in (north and south) hemispheres, which was rediscovered in 1878 in New York; this work shows Ptolemy's influence still dominant over Mercatorian cartography.
In 1541 he issued the celebrated terrestrial globe, which he dedicated to Nicolas Perrenot, father of Cardinal Granvelle: this was accompanied by his Libellus de usu globi, which is said to have been presented to Charles V. In 1551 a celestial globe followed.
Mercator early began to incline towards Protestantism; in 1533 he had retired for a time from Louvain to Antwerp, partly to avoid inquiry into his religious beliefs; in 1544 he was arrested and prosecuted for heresy, but escaped serious consequences (two of the forty-two arrested with him were burnt, one beheaded, two buried alive).
