Granville County is a county located in the state of North Carolina.
It was named for John Carteret, 1st Earl Granville, who as heir to one of the eight original Lords Proprietors of the Province of Carolina, claimed one eighth of the land granted in the charter of 1665.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 33.30% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older.

The act establishing the county ordered the first court to be held at the town hall of Salem, at which time the justices were to select a place for future courts until a courthouse could be erected.
The county was originally named for James Glasgow, but when he became publicly involved in land frauds it was changed to Greene in honor of Nathaniel Greene, Washington's right-hand-man. Greene is regarded as second only to Washington as the greatest soldier of the Revolution.
It is in the eastern section of the State and is bounded by the Pamlico Sound and Beaufort, Washington, Tyrrell and Dare counties (and on the banks by the Atlantic Ocean and Dare and Carteret counties).

Granville records futher show that the patriarch of the Bennett family, Lewis Bennett was a neighbor and friend of Joseph Gooch (c1732-1810); both men being the grandfathers of the people named above.
The John Walker family of Granville County, NC Martha Walker Bennett, is from a prominent family in Granville.
Martha Bennett does appear in Granville Tax records as late as 1858, when she is taxed in the Knapp of Reeds district on 216 acres worth $540.00 on the Tar River.

Granville Plantation was never large by standards of the day, nor were the Dicks family considered to be wealthy.
The Granville Plantation Cemetery or the "Dicks Family Cemetery" was restored in 1990 by James H. Goodman who cleared the area and restored the original brick wall around the oldest section.

John Gooch is identified as the patriarch of the Granville county, NC Gooch family by evidence of his will proved in November Court of 1793, which lists all of his children.
Granville county records show that Gideon was one of the later arrivals of the Gooches to NC.
Gideon's children are well documented in his will and in other records in Granville county, but the identify of his wife (or wives) is obscured by the loss of most of the records for Caroline County, Virginia where he no doubt married and resided in his early years.

The last record I have found for Abraham and Elizabeth in Orange County VA is in 1745, The earliest record I have found for Abraham Mayfield (stated to be from Orange County) in Granville County NC is 1762 - an interval of 17 years.
My current conjecture is that Abraham and Elizabeth removed to Granville County NC with two (at least Stephen and Robert) or more of their sons in about the 1760 time frame.

 William Whorton 1736-1805
Granville Co., NC / Orange Co., NC William Wharton appeared to live on the western border of Granville Co. in the mid to late 1700's.
At the time, Orange county had just been formed (1752) from part of Granville Co. Several districts on the western edge of Granville and northeastern edge of Orange County are variously listed in either county.
He was given land grants of 800 acres in Jackson County in 1817 and another 255 acres in Hall County in 1830.

State appropriations of $354,900 have assisted the county survey as well as restoration of the Central Children's Home, the Granville County Courthouse, the Dr. George C. Shaw House, and the Granville County Museum, and supported the Camp Butner Historic Cemetery project.
Following the comprehensive architectural survey of the county in 1983-1985, with the assistance of state and federal grants a number of properties were listed in the National Register.
