In mathematics, the graph of a function is the collection of all pairs (x, f(x)) of the function.
For general functions, the graphic representation cannot be applied and the formal definition of the graph of a function suits the need of mathematical statements, e.g., the closed graph theorem in functional analysis.
The concept of the graph of a function is generalised to the graph of a relation.

This tutorial displays the graph of the derivative of a function directly beside the graph of the function, for the sake of comparison.
Students often expect the derivative of a function to be positive where the function itself is positive and for the derivative of a function to be negative where the function itself is negative.
Also, where the function is increasing, and where the derivative is positive, the graphs are drawn in red.

While Maple can easily create a plot of the graph of a function from the formula, important information about the graph of a function often requires tools from calculus and algebra.
When the formula for a function becomes complex, it may be impractical to calculate the derivatives and their roots by hand.
In analyzing the graph of a function one often wants information about the sign of either the function or one of its derivatives.

Question Corner -- How To Graph The Inverse Of A Function
It is actually easier to graph the inverse of a function than it is to solve for it.
These are the same as the points on the graph of f but with the order of the coordinates interchanged: instead of plotting (x,f(x)) for various numerical values of x, we plot (f(y),y) for various numerical values of y (which is the same thing as plotting (f(x),x) for various numerical values of x).
Thus the graph which we constructed in this method is not really the graph of a function, since the value of the inverse of f(x) is not well defined at 4 (it could either be 2 or -2).
