Equalization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "equalizer" is eroneous applied as a general term for audio filters.
One common type of equalizer is the graphic equalizer, which consists of a bank of sliders for boosting and cutting different bands (or frequencies ranges) of sound.
An equalizer is used to ensure that there are no frequency bands where there is a round trip gain of greater than 1, as these are heard as audible feedback.

 Enjoy The Drive -- Equalizers
Parametric equalizers, or tone controls, allow you to set not only the amount, in decibels, by which a certain frequency band is boosted or cut, but also the width and/or center frequency of the band.
Parametric equalizers are more versatile than graphic equalizers, which have fixed center frequencies and bandwidths.
Graphic equalizers that have five or seven bands of tonal control usually can be set by ear, while units with 10 or more bands of tonal control--or sophisticated parametric equalizers--require a real-time analyzer to set them properly.

 graphic equalizer - a Whatis.com definition
A graphic equalizer is a high-fidelity audio control that allows the user to see graphically and control individually a number of different frequency bands in a stereophonic system.
Graphic equalizers are common in middle- and high-end stereophonic sound systems for consumer use.
Graphic equalizer programs are also available for use in fine-tuning sound in a personal computer.

The OtsDJ Graphic Equalizer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
It is useful for general tonal corrections, to obtain the most desirable sound quality, and it can be used to reduce the effect of resonant peaks and dips in loudspeaker response, and in the acoustic environment, reducing the tendency for acoustic feedback.
The graphic equalizer cannot be a substitute for a well designed amplifier/loudspeaker system, or for good acoustics, but it does provide the ability to tune your system to the acoustic environment it will be used in.
Graphic Equalizer sliders (32Hz to 16Khz): These sliders enable +12dB boost or -12dB cut to be applied to one of the 10 predefined frequencies.

What is graphic equalizer? - a definition from Whatis.com
- A graphic equalizer is a high-fidelity audio control that allows the user to see graphically and control individually a number of different frequency bands in a stereophonic system.
A typical graphic equalizer consists of several audio filter/amplifiers, each centered at a specific frequency in the audio range.
The gain (volume) controls in most graphic equalizers are slide potentiometers that are adjusted by moving a control button up or down.

An automatic muting circuit mutes the equalizer's output for approximately 3 seconds after the power is switched on, to prevent transients from damaging amplifiers and speaker systems.
Feedback Control In situations where restrictions make a feedback proof setup impossible, Yamaha graphic equalizers can be used to reduce the gain of problem frequencies, thus minimizing the possibility of sudden outburst of feedback that can ruin a performance.
Sound Shaping Yamaha graphic equalizers are also creative tools that can shape the tone of the instrument or voice to achieve a better blend in the mix.

 Eight Band Sub-Woofer Equaliser
The equaliser is a constant Q design, so unlike most "ordinary" equalisers, it does not have a very low Q at low settings of boost and cut.
This is a major problem with the standard (graphic) equaliser circuit, and is completely avoided by the constant Q version.
If you use the PCB for this project, it is designed to use miniature (9mm square) rotary pots, so the term "graphic" equaliser is something of a misnomer.

 DEQ 60 Graphic Equalizer
When the term "graphic equalizer" was first coined, the intent was to provide a device that allowed the user to "draw" the desired frequency response using slider controls on the unit's front panel.
Thus, the Holy Grail of graphic equalizers is a device with a response that truly matches the slider settings.
The DEQ 60 is the world's first true graphic equalizer (i.e., one providing real mechanical front panel slide controls) whose output response precisely matches its front panel settings.

Consequently there are difficulties with implementing a graphics equalizer on an iPod (or media players in general).
Further, the equalizer characterization process can also be performed in real-time so as to enable a user to dynamically alter equalizer settings during playback.
Example: any M-band graphic equalizer to be converted to an N-band parametric filter representation, where N is less than M and determined by the target complexity of the equalizer implementation.
