Topic: Graphical interface

Graphical user interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A graphical user interface (or GUI, often pronounced "gooey"), is a particular case of user interface for interacting with a computer which employs graphical images and widgets in addition to text to represent the information and actions available to the user.
The concept of hyperlinks was further refined and extended to graphics by researchers at Xerox PARC, who went beyond text-based hyperlinks and used GUIs as the primary interface for the Xerox Alto computer.
The visible graphical interface features of an application are often referred to as chrome.

Other Graphical Interface Systems of Interest
A "specific graphical interface" has been developed to enable a user to specify graphically things like intervals of dates, etc. This system could be useful for expert searchers, since it is customizable, and the interfaces to change the assigned attributes seem understandable.
The graphical interface, and the display of the four separate techniques simultaneously, are both quite interesting.
Since this interface is still in the experimental stage, it has few practical applications, and searchers would need shape-recognition training before viewing their results.

 Graphical User Interface Design
The initial graphic user interface to bridge computers and users wasn’t even available to the general public until the first Apple computers were released on the market.
The multiple icon interface used on the tool pane on the left is pretty unique to Adobe products, but once a user learns it, it provides a fast way to find a tool that the user isn’t certain where to find.
This is an example of a user interface being more complex that it needs to be and getting in the way of the user causing a slowdown in work flow or mistakes.

The first user interface came about as a result of a discussion concerning what the user needed to know at anytime during the game.
Our first idea was to have a side bar interface, which after its design, the team agreed would interfere with the game itself.
The meters that were finally agreed upon came fairly quickly to the team after a few weeks of brainstorming and consulting with other teams.

What is graphical user interface? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
The first graphical user interface was designed by Xerox Corporation's Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s, but it was not until the 1980s and the emergence of the Apple Macintosh that graphical user interfaces became popular.
One reason for their slow acceptance was the fact that they require considerable CPU power and a high-quality monitor, which until recently were prohibitively expensive.
In addition to their visual components, graphical user interfaces also make it easier to move data from one application to another.

Graphical User Interface - MSN Encarta
Graphical User Interface (GUI), in computer science, a display format that enables the user to choose commands, start programs, and see lists of files and other options by pointing to pictorial representations (icons) and lists of menu items on the screen (see User Interface).
Another benefit is that applications written for a GUI are device-independent: As the interface changes to support new input and output devices, such as a large-screen monitor or an optical storage device, the applications can, without modification, use those devices.
There are ways to lessen the burden of this expense.

What is GUI? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: graphical user interface
The term came into existence because the first interactive user interfaces to computers were not graphical; they were text-and-keyboard oriented and usually consisted of commands you had to remember and computer responses that were infamously brief.
The command interface of the DOS operating system (which you can still get to from your Windows operating system) is an example of the typical user-computer interface before GUIs arrived.
An intermediate step in user interfaces between the command line interface and the GUI was the non-graphical menu-based interface, which let you interact by using a mouse rather than by having to type in keyboard commands.

Graphical user interfaces allow end users to interact with applications in a more or less intuitive manner.
The simplest user interface consists of two components: a prompt displayed on the screen and the keyboard used to enter information into the program.
Practically every program used today uses graphics as a way for a user to interact with the program because a GUI is an intuitive and efficient way to collect information from a user and to display information for a user to read.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
A GUI (graphical user interface) is a graphical (rather than purely textual) user interface to a computer.
One important HCI factor is that different users form different conceptions or mental models about their interactions and have different ways of learning and keeping knowledge and skills (different "cognitive styles" as in, for example, "left-brained" and "right-brained" people.) In addition, cultural and national differences play a part.
