A display device is a device for visual or tactile presentation of images (including text) acquired, stored, or transmitted in various forms.
A volumetric display device is a graphical display device that forms an image in three-dimensional volume,as opposed to the planar image of the traditional display technique.
A graphical user interface (or GUI, sometimes pronounced gooey) is a method of interacting with a computer through a metaphor of direct manipulation of graphical images and widgets in addition to text.

A device according to claim 1, wherein said electronic circuitry is operative to receive from the computer signals corresponding to data stored in the computer but not displayed on the screen, and to move said tactile pins so as to display the stored data.
A device according to claim 1, wherein said electronic circuitry is operative, when said tactile display is displaying an image corresponding to a monochrome image displayed on the computer screen, to represent respectively darker and lighter shades by different predetermined respective displacements of said pins.
This is psychologically advantageous in computerized artistry: a graphics artist draws with the mouse and sees the results as he or she draws, just as he or she sees the results of drawing on a piece of paper with a pencil.

First, when the image is going to displayed on a device having greater resolution than the one for which the bitmap was created, it is necessary to either recalculate the entire image, or forego the increased resolution of the alternative output device.
The present invention provides a method and means for overcoming the failure of prior graphic systems for being able to properly generate and manipulate graphical data for display on any resolution output device without having to redefine and recalculate the underlying geometries based on the output resolution.
The cache for each device to which the shape is drawn maintains the parameters required for generating a bitmap for the particular shape on the specified view device.

In a raster scan device the picture is built up row by row from top to bottom of the image over a discrete set of points in each row, with the intensity applied at each point being set individually.
Among the devices which use raster scan technology are laser writers (300, 600, 1200 individually addressable points per inch), flat panel screens of various types, for example Light Emitting Diode devices, Liquid Crystal Displays and Plasma Panel displays.

Graphics devices fall into two classes: devices which produce a hardcopy output, usually on paper; and interactive devices, which usually display the plot on a TV monitor.
device name or file name is the name by which the output device is known to the operating system.
For most hardcopy devices, this should be the name of a disk file, while for interactive devices, it should be the name of a device of the appropriate type; in both cases, the name should be specified according to the syntax of the operating system in use.
