News - ATI talks Rev graphics chip // Wii /// Eurogamer
As those who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Revolution may know, technology giant ATI is currently hard at work developing the graphics chip that will power the new machine - and now they've gone on record to tell us a little bit more about it.
In a recent interview with RevolutionReport.com, ATI's John Swiminer confirmed that the Revolution chip, currently titled Hollywood, will not be based on current or forthcoming PC architecture - but he didn't say whether it is instead based on Flipper, the chip used in the GameCube.
Even when the Flipper chips came out, people were asking that question: "Is this a spin-off of something done on the PC?", and the answer is no," Swiminer stated.

Graphics chip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early graphics chips, often also referred to as Video Display Processors, were simple video adapters for generating text and computer graphics on a video computer display found in early computers and graphics cards.
It was sometimes connected to a simple radio frequency adapter for interfacing with a common television receiver.
The more advanced graphics chips available today, capable of independent computation and graphics processing are nowadays generally called graphics processing units, in analogy with central processing units.

ITworld.com - Nvidia debuts graphics chip for handhelds
Looking to break away from its traditional PC graphics market, Nvidia Corp. introduced on Tuesday its first graphics chip, the GoForce 2150, designed to be used in handheld devices such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
The chip was unveiled at the Computex exhibition in Taipei, which runs through Sept. 26.
The chip's LCD controller allows fast-switching between dual screen interfaces, such as those found on clam-shell phone handsets with a small external display and a larger internal color screen, the company said.

The graphics chip industry is readying for a renewed scuffle this autumn, as chipmaker Nvidia prepares its bid to regain the performance crown and other chip designers refresh their products.
Details of the NV30 are sketchy, but the chip is Nvidia's answer to ATI's Radeon 9700 chip, which has been the clear performance leader since its introduction in July, according to experts and ZDNet UK Labs tests.
It will also give graphics card owners a way to keep their hardware up-to-date while they are waiting for faster, more complex graphics chips to arrive.

nVidia rolls out new graphics chip - Feb. 22, 2001
The chip is being likened to the "little brother" of the X-Box's graphics engine.
Additionally, the chip handles a sizable percentage of the necessary calculations itself, freeing up the computer's main processor to handle other functions.
Because the chip's technology is so closely tied with the X-Box — and because the X-Box is so similar to a PC (developer-wise) — consumers likely will see popular X-Box titles ported over to the PC to boost the bottom line of publishers.

ATI Answers Rival with New Graphics Chip
Graphics chipmaker ATI (Quote, Chart) upped the ante in its battle with rival NVIDIA (Quote, Chart) with the release of a new high-end processor: the RADEON X800.
NVIDIA's inroads with Dell (Quote, Chart) and HP (Quote, Chart) have helped it sell more of its GPUs and the GeForce 6800 chip is based on some of the same core specs as the RADEON line but some analysts and enthusiasts sites are already crowning the X800 as the faster of the two.
The chip will be powered by a 16-pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 520MHz and has been paired with high-speed 1.12GHz data rate GDDR3 memory and a 256-bit memory interface.

Of course the big question is, "How long do I hold off on a 3D card?" The general rule of thumb is that so long as you update every year or two, you will most likely have a card that will work with any game that comes out on the market during that time.
