Prior to WW 11 six hundred craftsmen were working in the Graslitz factory, making a full line of woodwind instruments, from piccolos to contrabassoons.
The Winnenden bassoon was a further development of the best Graslitz design, incorporating improvements in the boot joint, long joint and later additional keys and rollers.

Toward the end of the 19th century Graslitz was designated as the chief centre of Austrian instrument manufacturing.
Vinzenz Püchner, born on 8th July 1870 in Graslitz, had lost his parents while very young and had gone to live with the Gessner family, where he had come into early contact with the making of wind instruments.
The Bohemian part of the “music-belt”, represented by the chief cities of Graslitz and Schönbach, belonged to the newly-founded Czechoslovak Republic.

Curiously, JSK did not use his own name on instruments, so they show up under many brands, and sometimes even say they were made in France.
Common names on JSK saxes are 'Graslitz' and 'Kohlert' (often in combination with other names), and later he used 'The New King'.
Keilwerth stencils are often very ornate, with pearl touches on every key and sometimes even sheet metal key guards with the 'JSK' initials worked into the design from multiple views.

Julius Keilwerth first worked for the Kohlert company in Graslitz, Czechoslovakia (A.K.A. the “Czech/Slovak Republic” or “CSR”).
It’s known that the Nazi regime initially considered the saxophone a “Western menace” and frowned on its use, but there were definitely a few companies that flourished and these horns occasionally do appear on eBay and are engraved with full Nazi regalia.
Anyhow, in 1948, the Keilwerth company was "nationalized" and the workshops in Graslitz were taken over by the Czech collective combine, Amati (founded in 1946, according to Amati’s website.

Up until the second world war, musical instruments in the bohemian-saxonian musical area, were published like sheet music meaning that a manufacturer's name was quite rare as an engraving on an instrument.
so many Meinls in Graslitz and in the west after the war, so Anton Meinl decided to create a new brand name for the instruments made by the Wenzel Meinl GmbH - and that is how the Melton name was born, which means “Meinl tone”.
In 1957 the first Melton Logo was created including the line "Metallblasinstrumente", translated: "brasswind instruments".

This is beautiful old European Eb Tuba made c.1880 by "W. Stowassers Sohn - Graslitz" with four side action rotary valves (SARV).
It has a massive thumb ring and all ferules and valves are decorated profusely (see 2nd photo below).

Kraslice itself is very near the current German border, and is where Julius Keilwerth and Joseph Kohlert (Amati claims ties to the Kohlert legacy today) built great saxophones and bassoons for many years.
The town was called 'Graslitz' at the time Keilwerth started there in 1925.
The horn doesn't have a bad pedigree at all, and though it doesn't currently play, the old Kohlert baris that I've played are really rockin' ole dudes.
