The island of Grassholm, 6 miles off the Pembrokeshire coast, is the most spectacular gannetry in southern Britain, and the third largest in the northern hemisphere.
Grassholm means “green island” in Norse, though it looks white from a distance, stained with guano and covered with gannets sitting on their nests.
Grassholm has been owned since 1947 by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and was the first reserve the Society ever bought.

Once the sheep no longer grazed on the island, the grass would have become denser and this may be when the Puffins colonised the island, somewhere around the 19th century.
The birds may have relocated to Grassholm after being disturbed on the neighbouring (in Gannet terms) island of Lundy.
Grassholm is only 22 acres and there are at least 60,000 Gannets plus their chicks and some small colonies of Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Shags.

A survey of gannets on the island of Grassholm, 10 miles west off the Pembrokeshire coast, shows that the birds are still increasing in numbers, and it is now the UK's third largest gannet colony.
Grassholm Island is the only gannet colony in Wales, and now supports around 8% of the world's population of gannets.
The birds can cover the west half of the island completely and sometimes, with the light in the right direction, the island can be seen from a vast distance, gleaming like an ice-capped rock on the horizon.

On most islands, their numbers have recently fluctuated due to myxomatosis, although the disease failed to affect the rabbits on Skokholm due to absence of the flea vector.
On Grassholm, in the areas not colonized by gannets, a species poor, red fescue mattress has developed and the normally common sea thrift is absent, whereas in some of the more exposed areas of Skokholm, sea thrift is the dominant species.
In addition to their biological interest, the Welsh islands also have considerable geological, archaelogical and cultural interest, and to quote Dr Malcolm Smith (Director of Policy and Science for the Countryside Council for Wales) “the range and diversity of interest deemed to be important on the Welsh islands often belies their physical size”.

Many of the seabirds for which the island is renowned granted close-up views while many smaller birds such as Rock Pipit, Wheatear and Meadow Pipit put in appearances as we walked around the edge of the island.
The forecast storms rolled in during the early afternoon and the dry, sandy paths became rivers and ferocious winds battered the island.
Although I had emphasised in the promotional literature that facilities were limited on the island, the consensus seemed to be that perhaps I had been a little over-zealous and that the cabins and general facilities were perfectly adequate and all added to the adventure.

We followed the path which lead to the south of the island because the warden had said that some of the best spots for Puffins were in that area.
It was an exceptionally clear day and we could plainly see the RSPB owned island of Grassholm, about 7 miles away.
One half of the island was a yellowish, white colour, caused by the 30,000 Gannets which breed there.
