Anchor escapement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The anchor escapement is a type of escapement, the mechanism in a clock that maintains the swinging of a pendulum for accurate timekeeping.
This is the pushing backwards of the escape wheel during the supplementary arc of the pendulum.
One escapement which is completely different to the anchor was John Harrison's complex grasshopper escapement.

Escapement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An escapement is also found in a mechanical watch, powering and regulated by a balance wheel and hairspring instead of a pendulum.
The earliest escapement (from about 1275) is the verge escapement, also known as the crown-wheel-verge escapement or the verge-and-foliot escapement with a small modification.
One of the oddest mechanical escapements known is John Harrison's grasshopper escapement.

Anchor escapement - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The anchor escapement is a type of escapement, the mechanism in a clock that regulates the swinging of a pendulum for accurate timekeeping.
The teeth on the escapement were also modified into a rounded shape, such that the motion of the anchor past the point where they caught the tooth would ride smoothly on the face of the gear, and no longer forced the system to rotate backward.
The anchor escapement system increased accuracy by about ten times over older systems, and from that point on almost every clock mechanism for the next 50 years was based on the anchor with additional modifications to further reduce drag or recoil.

Escapement   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
A major advance in timekeeping was introduced by Robert Hooke, who designed the anchor escapement, also known as the "Anchor-Hooke" or recoil escapement.
Cricket-head escapements carved by Harrison from wood in the middle of the 18th century are still operating.
Escapements powered by either clockwork or twisted rubber-bands were also used as the output-devices in early model radio control systems, prior to the introduction of digital proportional systems using the modern electric motor-driven servo actuator in the 1970's.

 DENT - CONCORDE
It has John Harrison's 'Grasshopper' escapement which is fascinating to watch and gets it's name from the way the escapement kicks away from the escape teeth like the leg of the insect.
One is Harrison's escapement spring remontoire (also used by the Schwalbach tower clock) and the other an electrically driven version of Christiaan Huygen's endless rope train remontoire.
A remontoire is not properly an escapement but a constant force device used to deliver an even and constant power to the escapement and simultaneously separate it from errors that may be produced further down the wheel train.

Clock Escapements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The escapement is the heart of a clock and a good escapement is esential for consistent timekeeping and reliability.
Escapements take many forms, from the crownwheel-and-verge used since medieval times to the highly sophisticated escapements used in precision regulator clocks and chronometers.
Other types of escapement are also considered, such as small-span anchor pallets, the escapement used in 400-day clocks, pin-pallet and pin-wheel escapements, as well as more sophisticated designs such as gravity escapements and Harrison's grasshopper escapement.

 SINCLAIR - GRASSHOPPER
This escapement arrangement was used in Harrisons' first entry into the competition for England's' Longitude Board prize of 20,000 BPS in 1735.
These being temperature compensation, reduction of friction, perfection of the spiral spring escapement remontoire to achieve even power delivery to the escapement (this remontoir was used on H4 which did win the Longitude prize.
Huygens was the first to apply the pendulum to an escapement and to invent the spiral spring balance wheel as used in watches.

 Escapements in Motion!
Discover how much more there is to know about escapements with "Clock and Watch Escapement Mechanics." Other books treating escapement design specify the angles required in their design, but they do not explain how these angles and other measurements are obtained.
The animations are intended to show viewers how each escapement is supposed to work, as this is designed to be a website for horological education!
Knowing how each escapement is supposed to work would help you in designing or repairing timepieces, from antique clock repair to modern wristwatch design.

The Skeleton Wall Clock with grasshopper escapement, after John Harrison, is constructed of English walnut - plain and burr, Box wood, Lignum Vitae, Pitch Pine and yew.
The top two arbors and grasshopper arbor each have a brass shaft glued axially to obviate movement from humidity.
All of this contributes to the precision of this time piece, which can be expected to maintain accuracy to within ten seconds per week (although the example shown here has consistently maintained an accuracy of two to three seconds per week).

THE CONSTRUCTION OF A WOODEN CLOCK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It is possible to construct the clock without a lathe but this availability makes the work far easier.
This book now incorporates an additional chapter detailing an alternative grasshopper escapement which is the best escapement for a wooden clock, together with an automatic winding system which is highly desirable feature when using the grasshopper escapement.
This is an excellent project for the beginner or the constructor who has a preference for working with wood in clock making.

 Devon Sea Clock
John Harrison and his brother James, who were originally carpenters, built a series of such clocks for test purposes and their first model was named "H.l" which was mainly made of wood and weighed some 72lb.
It incorporated several revolutionary features, notably a "Grasshopper" escapement and 2 dumb-bell pendulums.
We have retained the "Grasshopper" escapement and the dumb-bell pendulums, and still use a special wood - Lignum Vitae - for the pallets.
