Since their self-titled album in 1995, all but one of their albums (the exception being Live) have been in the top 15 of the Billboard 200.
Produced by Ron St. Germain, the album was recorded live in contrast to their previous two albums in which all instruments were recorded separately.
The album is also known for its third single, "Amber", an ethereal love song with surf guitar and the group's signature reggae-flavored sound.

311 : Grassroots - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Perhaps one of the 1994's most underrated releases, Grassroots artistically ignores corporate rock's temptations of conformity, which consequently threaten the possibility of mainstream airplay.
While Grassroots lacks any hit-worthy singles, it does offer plenty of highlights including the rhythmically eclectic "Omaha Stylee," the desirous sing-along "8:16 A.M.," and funky hip-hop/rock hybrid "Applied Science." The album's remaining tracks prove equally essential as they individually piece together the Grassroots puzzle, which combined provides a splendid overview of 311's signature diversity.
Despite the less-refined outturn, Grassroots remains 311's finest moment artistically, and listeners of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, and Rage Against the Machine will find this CD an indispensable addition to their music collections.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Grassroots
Sure I could rag on Grassroots' obvious influences, and the incessant white-boy rap, but since I found this album to be more than infectious, I will refrain from toeing the collective critical line.
The Jamaican dub edge was a really smart route for these guys, I feel the sound sets them apart from other acts that are in the same so-called "rap-metal" genre, although I hesitate to label 311 as metal due to their obviously diverse influences.
While the other tunes on the album are certainly worth checking out, I feel 311 was really trying to establish their identity on Grassroots, thus I stuck with the tracks that stood out to me.

Overall, this is an album that-- despite limited commercial success upon its release-- has grown in reputation to be one of the bona-fide classics of the genre.
The whole album has a slightly aggressive streak to it in comparison to their other albums but when they go mellow, they do so in a big way.
The same year "Grassroots" was released, Korn unleashed their debut which led to endless groups with superior sounding recordings (mainly to cope with the increased detuned air being pushed around) but with very little to say for themselves.

They stood on the side of the interstate and watched as all of their equipment and personal belongings burned, but they still managed to play a headlining gig, the next day in Omaha using borrowed equipment.
The tour was briefly sidelined when the band's RV caught fire and exploded, destroying all their equipment and personal possessions - but, determined to stay on the road, the band canceled only one show before returning to the stage with gear donated by sympathetic friends and fans.
With a new album's worth of songs in their arsenal, 311 will hit the road this Fall for a special grassroots club tour, which will be followed by a U.S. tour of larger venues throughout the year 2000.

It was on the album 311, also known as The Blue Album.

This song was later covered by the Red House Painters on their 1996 album, Songs for a Blue Guitar.

In Music We Trust - Melissa Ferrick: Freedom
A soulful, no frills approach to life, Ferrick writes relaxing, jagged folk-pop songs that are rooted in the song, rather than sugarcoated hooks or slick production that buries the natural feel of the music.
Diving into the quirky bounce of "Hold On," the album's pace is kicked up a notch, as drum loops and deeper bass add a boom to Ferrick's laid back, easy going style.
A very grassroots felt album, the feelings and emotions are all developed from the ground up and are as much an expression of Ferrick's life and urges as they are the listener's way of escaping their fears and self doubts.

 311 Grassroots CD
The impulse to skip wildly between styles is one of the band's distinguishing characteristics, and that impulse comes to the fore on GRASSROOTS.
In addition to the mixture of funk, hard rock, and hip-hop that typified 311's debut, GRASSROOTS also features island grooves, psychedelia, and jam band-like explorations.
Fortunately, the individual members all have the instrumental chops and the freewheeling sense of fun needed to make the pell-mell fusion work, and while the group would continue to refine its aesthetic and gain in popularity with future releases, GRASSROOTS remains one of their strongest and most defining efforts.

 Radio Airplay 101 - Payola, part 1 of 5
Although established label people (and radio people) realize that it's a red herring for a new indie, the indie's condemnation of Clear Channel and payola is neverending.
For a grassroots indie artist or label to think that a radio group owner (CC or otherwise) is "holding them back" by only offering airplay to "big" labels who can "pay" them, is putting energy into the wrong area.
But the real answer for the 16 year old hostess is the answer for the grassroots indie artist: Why are you wasting your time focusing on things that are so high level that they don't apply to you?
