  Grateful Dead (album) at AllExperts
Grateful Dead is an eponymous live double album by the Grateful Dead, released in 1971.
Also known as Skull & Roses (due to its iconic cover art) and Skullfuck (the name the band originally wanted to give to the album, which was rejected by the record company), this album should not be confused with the band's first studio album, 1967's The Grateful Dead.
The album's cover art is taken from an illustration in an old edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

 Review | The Grateful Dead
While some hard-core fans object (arguing that, with the Grateful Dead's generous taping and trading policies, much of this material can be had for free, rather than lining the pockets of the corporation), it's a positive boon for those new to the band's music, or those lacking the time for tape trading.
The Grateful Dead were always audio innovators, and the improved sound quality of these remasters is almost reason enough to replace the previous cd issues (despite the set's hefty price tag).
The album begins with its high point, a medley of "Banks of Lough Gowna" and "The Reunion" leading into a spirited version of "Friend of the Devil." That basic format is repeated through the album, to something of a diminishing effect.

Earlier in their career, the Dead's crew and other Pranksters shared immense quantities of pot and LSD with the audience, forming a psychedelic bond that acted as a level playing field, in which the band are just part of the same community of people, just having a good time.
By the Eighties, the Dead were a solid touring organization playing excellent music that spanned their entire career, restoring that sense of community, and looking and acting very much the same as they always had, which was somewhat of a relief to the audience that had followed them for so long.

Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter recalls that he couldn’t believe his good fortune at the group’s musical transition in 1969.
For most Dead fans, their defining Moment came at a live show, a bootleg, or one of the eight live officially released live albums.
The Dead’s first album was cut in two days, and sounded nothing like they ever would again; the second and third albums found the Dead assaulting the studio on their own terms, and failing, earning them little but massive debt.

I love Mickey Hart and his contributions not only to the Dead, but to percussion in general, but to my ears, the single drum set on this recording lends a simplicity and purity that is seldom evident on Dead outings with the full double drum set-up.
The Dead were surrounded by technical people who loved the music and found a way to give it life on vinyl (and digital media).

But if nothing else, Grateful Dead does make me a bit nostalgic for them golden days of yore, when not much of anything could be predicted from the group except that they would inevitably try through the course of each performance to take you some place you'd never been before.
It can't quite be called bad, since it's pretty clear that the Dead have progressed so far beyond your average garage band that there's no danger of them ever slipping back, but it still can provide a bit of a letdown for those who have come to expect only great things from the grate.
It pains me to say this about a drummer who blissfully shines throughout the rest of the album, playing what amounts to perfect supportive percussion despite any quick changes that are going down in the rest of the group, but given his solo group of minutes, he don't cut it here at all.

The Grateful Dead's 1972 tour of Europe has long been thought of one of the great jewels in the crown of the band's three-decade performing career.
The Dead had given a few isolated performances in England and France in previous years, but this lengthy and ambitious sojourn was their first full-fledged European tour, and they took the UK and the Continent by storm.
The trip was immortalized on one of the Dead's best-loved live albums, a three-LP set that had briefly carried the working title Steppin' Out (to go with Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse's famous cover image of a foot, emerging from under a rainbow and striding across the globe).

Review: This 1973 release was the very last collection that the Grateful Dead authorized during their tenure with Warner Bros. in the late '60s and early '70s.
However, this live disc was a sort of melancholy affair, as it centered on material featuring Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (guitar/vocals/mouth harp), who had left the band due to illness in June of the previous year.
While most assuredly not the finest example of the Dead's formidable acoustic sets, the platter opens with a quartet of cover tunes -- many of which had been entries in Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and McKernan's folky jug band repertoire prior to ultimately forming the electric, psychedelic Grateful Dead.

So, while this studio recording ultimately fails in accurately exhibiting the Grateful Dead's tremendous range, it's a valiant attempt to corral the group's hydra-headed psychedelic jug-band music on vinyl.
Rather than prepare all new material for the recording sessions, a vast majority of the disc is comprised of titles that the band had worked into their concurrent performance repertoire.

Review: The Grateful Dead's third studio effort was also the first that the band did without any Warner Bros. staff producers or engineers hampering their creative lifestyle and subsequent processes.
This was primarily the net result of the budding relationship between primary (by default) melodic contributor Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and Robert Hunter (lyrics), who began his nearly 30-year association with the Grateful Dead in earnest during these sessions.
