The Maria Mater Gratiae Philharmonic Society was founded in the year 1883 by Francesco Saverio Briffa who was very willing to introduce the concept in his native village, with its musical director Mr.
The Society was set up with the aim of reaching two main goals: the enhancing of musical culture in Zabbar and the recreation of its members.
From that day, the society was baptised Socjeta' Filarmonika Maria Mater Gratiae and became popularly known as "Tal-Baqra", a nickname associated with that of Mro.

 Gratiae Ludentes / A Renaissance Jestbook / Introduction
Gratiae Ludentes seems to be the only jest book still remaining from the early modern period that has not been edited or reprinted in a 19th or 20th century edition.
Gratiae Ludentes was entered in the Stationers' Register on 19 December 1637.
This edition of Gratiae Ludentes was typed up from STC 15105 (University Microfilm reel 766, BL copy) and preliminary notes prepared in the fall of 1994 by students in English 4900 at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

From the very beggining the club of Societa' Filarmonika Maria Mater Gratiae was situated in the principal street near the village square where all activities take place.
From it's very beggining Societa' Filarmonika Maria Mater Gratiae was respected and considered to be one of the best societies in Malta, and it is not the case to name all the important occassions that our society took part in.
I think that our society disserves all the recognition and merit that it possesses as it was always ranked in the highest positions in matters of art and music.
