Gratiot County Michigan is located in the middle of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
Much of the land in Gratiot Co. is flat and also was slow to drain back in the early days, therefore the farmers had to wait during the spring to plant their crops and often got a late start.
The county also is the geographical center of the lower peninsula which is marked in the town of St. Louis.

The mouth of the Gratiot River adjacent to Lake Superior is a favorite recreation spot open to the public as part of the Keweenaw County Park.
The original county park was also obtained with grants, at no cost to the county: 75% from the MNRTF and 25% from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act fund obtained for the County by the North Woods Conservancy.
Furthermore, Keweenaw County is more dependent upon logging and tourism for its economy than any other county in the state; and the traditional Keweenaw quality of life is almost entirely dependent upon public access to land for hunting, fishing and other recreational activities.

The poor-house is located in the township of Newark, one and one fourth miles from Ithaca.
Gratiot takes good care of her poor and the reports of the Superintendents of the Poor for 1883 show the expenditure of $5,791.10 for their relief, of which $2,266.06 was paid for temporary relief of persons not inmates of the county-poor house.

The County also signed a 10 year lease with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to use their 14-acre parcel immediately to the south that includes another 320 linear feet of shoreline.
The new County Park will also be home to the 1971 Tunnel Explosion Memorial which will commemorate the construction accident that took the lives of 22 men working on the water intake tunnel located beneath the park.
The 1971 Water Tunnel Explosion Foundation is raising funds for the memorial which is expected to be completed prior to the December 11th, 35th anniversary of the accident.

SITE HISTORY: The Zeilinger Property was part of the former Gratiot Metals Company, which operated as a junk and scrap metal yard and an underground bulk fuel storage station from the mid 1930s to 1983.
During a 1996 remedial investigation of the former Gratiot Metals site the extent of lead contamination was delineated and water was determined to be "not in an aquifer", meeting all applicable criteria.
In 1983 the Gratiot Metals Company declared bankruptcy and the property was sold.
